NEWTON, Mass, – The third ranked Virginia women’s soccer team suffered its first conference loss of the season, falling to No. 16 Boston College 1-0 Sunday afternoon. The loss also snapped the Cavaliers’ 13-game unbeaten streak.

“I thought we did a lot of good things today, but we just didn’t finish our chances,” said head coach Steve Swanson. “There are certainly some things we can take away from this game and learn from. We now must get ready for North Carolina on Friday.

The game was scoreless until the 88th minute of play, when the Eagles’ Natalie Crutchfield scored her second goal of the season on an assist from Gina DiMartino. Ten minutes earlier, the Cavaliers nearly took the lead as a cross was bobbled by the BC goalkeeper, and Kelly Quinn’s (Dublin, Ohio) shot on the loose ball in the box was saved by a Eagle defender.

With the loss, Virginia falls to 11-2-4 overall, 5-1-3 in the ACC. Boston College improves to 10-3-3, 3-3-2 in the conference.

Boston College outshot the Cavaliers 8-3, but Virginia had a 2-0 corner kick advantage. Chantel Jones (Midlothian, Va.) made five saves in net for Virginia, while Sarah Buonomo made one save for the Eagles.

The Cavaliers will close out the regular season on Friday as they visit No. 7 North Carolina. Game time at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live online by ACC Select.
