CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia baseball team earned a 5-1 win over Lehigh Saturday afternoon in its season opener at Davenport Field in the first game of a doubleheader. Jacob Thompson (Jr., Danville, Va.) pitched five innings, allowing just an unearned run, four hits and three walks while striking out six to earn the win. He matched the program record for career wins with 22, tying Sean Doolittle (2005-07).

Matt Packer (So., Germantown, Tenn.) pitched two scoreless innings to close things out.

David Coleman (Fr., Richmond, Va.) led the Cavaliers with a 2-for-4 effort. Ryan Smith (So., Waldorf, Md.) added a key two-run single for the Cavaliers, while David Adams (Jr., Margate, Fla.) reached base three times and scored twice.

Virginia broke into the scoring column in the third inning. Adams walked to lead off and then stole second. He advanced to third on a flyout and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jeremy Farrell (Jr., Westlake, Ohio).

The Mountain Hawks knotted the score in the next inning as Glenn Seitz scored on a Virginia throwing error.

The Cavaliers broke the game open with four runs in the fifth inning against reliever Billy Alec (0-1). Coleman broke the tie with a single to plate Adams. With the bases loaded, Smith delivered a two-run single to right field to give UVa a 4-1 lead. The Cavaliers tacked on an insurance run on a John Barr (Fr., Ivyland, Pa.) groundout.

Joe Matteo started for Lehigh and went four innings, giving up one run, five hits and four walks while striking out one.

The teams are back at 11 a.m. Sunday for another doubleheader. Parking will be limited to the Emmet/Ivy Garage because of the men’s basketball game vs. NC State that afternoon. No baseball parking will be available in the University Hall lots.
