TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Despite another stellar pitching performance from Pat McAnaney (Sr., Syracuse, N.Y.), the 14th-ranked Virginia baseball team was defeated 3-2 in 10 innings by second-ranked Florida State Sunday in the first game of a doubleheader at Dick Howser Stadium.
McAnaney held the nation’s top hitting team in check for much of the day. He pitched 6.2 innings and allowed just two earned runs, five hits and two walks while striking out nine. After allowing the first three batters of the game to reach base, McAnaney rolled and retired 18 of the next 19 hitters. Matt Packer (So., Germantown, Tenn.) took the loss and fell to 5-1 this season after giving up a run and two hits in 2.2 innings of relief.
FSU starter Geoff Parker matched McAnaney, going seven innings and giving up two earned runs, seven hits and three walks while fanning seven. Reliever Ryan Strauss (4-0) also was effective and pitched three scoreless innings with six strikeouts.
The Seminoles (27-3, 13-1 ACC) pushed across the winning run in the 10th inning on a one-out Jack Rye single up the middle through the drawn-in infield to score Luke Smierciak.
Both teams finished with seven hits. The Cavaliers’ hits came from seven players, with Dan Grovatt (Fr., Tabernacle, N.J.) and Patrick Wingfield (Sr., Winchester, Va.) driving home the two Virginia runs.
Virginia (24-8, 8-6) got a run in the first when Tyler Cannon (So., Pigeon Forge, Tenn.) singled, stole second base and came home on a single from Grovatt.
Florida State came back with two in its half of the first, taking advantage of back-to-back walks to lead off the inning. Buster Posey brought home the first run with a double to right field and Rye followed with an RBI groundout.
Virginia knotted the score in the fourth inning with a two-out rally, as Franco Valdes (So., Miami, Fla.) doubled off the base of the wall in right-center field and scored on a single by Wingfield.
