No. 2 FSU Slides Past No. 14 UVa, 3-2 in 10 Innings, for DH Sweep

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – No. 2 Florida State finished off a hard-fought series sweep of the No. 14 Virginia baseball team with a 3-2, 10-inning victory Sunday in the second game of a doubleheader at Dick Howser Stadium. The Seminoles also won the first game of the twinbill by an identical 3-2 count in 10 innings.

Florida State produced a run with one out in the 10^th inning. With the bases loaded and the infield in, Tyler Holt hit a high chopper that shortstop Greg Miclat (Jr., Concord, N.C.) caught and fired to the plate, but it was just late as Luke Smierciak slid home past catcher Ryan Smith (So., Waldorf, Md.) for the winning run.

Virginia starting pitcher Andrew Carraway (Jr., Marietta, Ga.) pitched six strong innings and struck out a career-high 10 batters in earning a no decision. He allowed two earned runs and six hits and did not walk a batter. Neal Davis (So., Baltimore, Md.) went 2.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen for Virginia, while Michael Schwimer (Sr., Alexandria, Va.) pitched the final inning to take the loss as he falls to 1-1 on the season.

Florida State starter Elih Villanueva went 7.2 innings, allowing two runs (one earned), eight hits and two walks while striking out nine. Jimmy Marshall (3-0) pitched the final 2.1 innings to earn the win.

Greg Miclat (Jr., Concord, N.C.) and Jarrett Parker (Fr., Stafford, Va.) each had two hits for the Cavaliers. Buster Posey had three hits to lead the Seminoles.

Virginia (24-9, 8-7 ACC) struck for a run in the first inning on a David Adams (Jr., Margate, Fla.) double to score Miclat, who had doubled to lead off the game.

Florida State (28-3, 14-1) tallied the tying run in the fourth inning when Tony Delmonico grounded into a fielder’s choice to bring home Posey.

In the seventh, the Seminoles took the lead when Dennis Guinn swatted a 3-2 pitch from Carraway over the left-field fence for a solo home run.

Virginia responded in the eighth inning as Tyler Biddix (Fr., Richmond, Va.) hit a two-out, pinch-hit single up the middle to score Adams and tie the game at two.

Virginia returns home for two midweek games this week. The Cavaliers take on Longwood at 6 p.m. Tuesday and Liberty at 6 p.m. Wednesday. UVa returns to ACC play next weekend at Maryland.
