COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Virginia baseball team finished off a three-game sweep of Maryland with an 11-4 victory Sunday on a chilly afternoon at Shipley Field in College Park. Andrew Carraway (Jr., Marietta, Ga.) pitched a career-high seven innings, while the Cavaliers’ offense racked up 14 hits, including three home runs, to cruise to the win.

Carraway (3-2) allowed a run, six hits and no walks while striking out nine. Maryland starter Kevin Biringer (3-2) took the loss and went 4.2 innings, giving up eight earned runs and 10 hits while striking out six.
Tyler Cannon (So., Pigeon Forge, Tenn.) hit his first homer of the season as part of a 3-for-4 day. He had a strong series, going 8-for-14 with five runs scored. Dan Grovatt (Fr., Tabernacle, N.J.) homered and went 2-for-5 with three RBI, while Jeremy Farrell (Jr., Westlake, Ohio), Franco Valdes (So., Miami, Fla.) and John Barr (Fr., Ivyland, Pa.) each had two hits. David Adams (Jr., Margate, Fla.) also homered and drove in two for Virginia (29-9, 11-7 ACC).
Cannon got the Cavaliers on the board with a first-inning solo home run, his first homer of the season and the second of his career. The Cavaliers scored again in the second inning on a Barr fielder’s choice that plated Farrell.
Grovatt put up another run in the fourth inning when he ripped a home run that clipped the foul pole in right field. It was his third home run this season.
After Carraway retired the first 10 Terrapin batters, Maryland (20-17, 5-13) broke through with a run in the bottom of the fourth. After the Terrapins loaded the bases with one out, Carraway rebounded by allowing just a Gerry Spessard sacrifice fly.
Virginia sent 11 batters to the plate in the fifth inning and scored five runs to blow the game open. The first four Cavaliers reached on singles, with Cannon’s bases-loaded single bringing home Barr with the first run. An out later, Grovatt ripped a two-run single to right field. Valdes then blooped a single to left to score two more runs and give UVa a commanding 8-1 lead.
In the seventh, Barr hit a double off the base of the wall in left center to score Tyler Biddix (Fr., Richmond, Va.). The Cavaliers then tacked on two in the eighth when Adams hit a towering home run over the wall in left-center to give Virginia an 11-1 lead.
Maryland scored three in the eighth on a double by Spessard, a groundout by Will Greenberg and a single from Chad Durakis.
Virginia returns home at 5 p.m. Tuesday for the first of six straight home games, as it plays host to No. 22 Coastal Carolina.
