Charlottesville, VA – While Virginia’s men’s golf teams had won five of the previous 20 Cavalier Classic tournaments, none successfully defended the title – until this year. After jumping out to a five-shot lead following Saturday’s opening round, the Cavaliers shot 5-over 293 for a 36-hole total of 575 to finish three shots ahead of runner-up Augusta State. The 21-team tournament was held at Birdwood Golf Course.
The Jaguars turned in the day’s best score, 291, to finish second at 578, and took medalist honors, but they could not wrestle the championship hardware away from a Cavalier team that featured three players competing in the tournament for the first time. NC State was third overall at 584.
Augusta State’s Henrik Norlander shot 4-under 68 during the final round to finish at 5-under 139 to take medalist honors.
Senior Greg Carlin led UVa with a 1-under 71 Sunday to finish second overall at 4-under 140. He shot 69 during Saturday’s opening round that had to be completed Sunday morning due to a weather delay.
It marked the second time this year Carlin has been the runner-up at a tournament. He was second at the Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic last fall. It was the fifth top-10 finish during his Cavalier career.
Conrad Von Borsig, who led the tournament with an opening round 68, finished seventh overall at 144. Steven Rojas was 12th after shooting a team-low 70 during the final round. He finished at 146. Will Collins was 20th at 148 and Kyle Stough was 30th at 150.
Von Borsig’s finish was his first top-10 this year and the third of his career.
Amory Davis and Henry Smart played as non-scoring individuals for the Cavaliers. Davis shot rounds of 76 and 73 for 149 and was 24th overall. Smart carded rounds of 73 and 77 and was 30th at 150.
The victory was UVa’s second tournament title this spring. The Cavaliers finished first at the Palmas Del Mar Collegiate in Puerto Rico in March.
The win helps the Cavaliers’ chances for a postseason berth to a NCAA Regional. NC State entered the event ranked 36th by Golfstat while Augusta State was 54th. Virginia entered the tournament ranked No. 75 by Golfstat.
The Cavaliers will now wait to see if they qualify for an NCAA Regional berth which are announced next week.
