CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – North Carolina scored four runs in the fourth inning en route to a 9-3 win over the No. 24 Virginia baseball team Friday night at Davenport Field. Greg Miclat (Jr., Concord, N.C.) and David Adams (Jr., Margate, Fla.) each recorded three hits for Virginia.

North Carolina starting pitcher Alex White (8-2) earned the win with six solid innings. He allowed three runs, six hits and four walks and struck out eight. Virginia starter Jacob Thompson (Jr., Danville, Va.) took the loss and fell to 5-3 after giving up six runs (five earned) and nine hits while striking out three over six innings.

Dustin Ackley had two hits and three RBI for North Carolina, while Chad Flack and Garrett Gore each added two hits.

North Carolina (41-8, 19-5 ACC) took a 2-0 lead in the first on a Tim Fedroff RBI single and a Virginia error which allowed Fedroff to cross the plate. Virginia responded with two of its own in the first on a run-scoring single from Adams and a bases-loaded walk to Franco Valdes (So., Miami, Fla.).

Virginia (33-16, 13-12) forged ahead in the second inning on a two-out single by Adams to plate Miclat.

The Tar Heels moved ahead for good with a four-run fourth inning. After Flack and Kyle Seager hit consecutive singles to lead off, Federowicz grounded out to tie the score. With two out, Sean Williams singled and Gore followed with run-scoring single to left. Ackley followed with a double down the left-field line to score two more and give UNC a 6-3 lead.

UNC tacked on a run in the seventh inning on a Flack single. The Cavaliers, after going hitless and having two total baserunners against White from the third to sixth innings, put two runners on with none out in the seventh to knock White from the game but could not push a run across.

Following a 31-minute rain delay, the Tar Heels scored their last two runs in the eighth against UVa reliever Jeff Lorick. With one out, Gore singled to score Federowicz and Ackley followed with a sacrifice fly to provide the final 9-3 margin.

The two teams match up for game two of the series at 6 p.m. Saturday.
