Fairfax, Va. – The Virginia men’s soccer team rallied from a 2-0 halftime deficit to defeat George Mason, 3-2, in double overtime Friday night in Fairfax, Va. Brian Ownby scored the golden goal in the 110th minute to give UVa (1-2-0) the victory.

George Mason (1-1-1) got first-half goals from Lucas Pardew and Ryan Gracia to take the 2-0 lead into the locker room at halftime. UVa began its rally in the 53rd minute, when Chris Agorsor headed a Hunter Jumper pass into the net to put the Cavaliers on the board. For Agorsor, it was his second goal of the year while Jumper registered his first career assist.

Agorsor nearly struck again three minutes later when he took a shot at an open goal after Patriots goakeeper Sean Kelley came out from between the pipes to make a save attempt. However, George Mason defender Jonathan Borrajo raced over from the right side to kick the ball away and maintain the Patriots one-goal lead.

Virginia got the equalizer in the 77th minute, when Jimmy Simpson fired a shot from 10 yards out off of an assist by Jonathan Villanueva. From there, the teams played to a 2-2 tie at the end of regulation.

In overtime, what was a light rain throughout the match became a downpour, saturating the field and making each offensive possession precious. After more than 19 minutes of scoreless play in overtime, the contest appeared destined for a tie when Brian Ownby found the back of the net to put an abrupt end to the match and give the Cavaliers the victory. Villanueva tallied his second point of the night with the assist.

Virginia out-shot George Mason, 22-16, and held an 8-4 advantage on corner kicks. Dan Louisignau earned his third-consecutive start in goal for Virginia and had six saves. In goal for George Mason, Sean Kelley had six saves.

Virginia returns to Klöckner Stadium on Sunday when it hosts Hofstra at 7 p.m.
