CHARLOTTESVILLE – Tony Tchani scored two goals and the Virginia men’s soccer team topped Hofstra, 4-2, Sunday night at Klöckner Stadium. Chris Agorsor and Matt Mitchell also netted goals for UVa (2-2-0), which won its second-straight game.
“Once again we had good chances offensively,” Virginia head coach George Gelnovatch said. “We finished four of those chances and scored on our first two shots of the game. I think our staff did a good job of managing minutes tonight after playing 110 minutes on Friday night at George Mason.”
Eighteen Cavaliers saw action in all, and six different players registered shots on goal. Tchani put Virginia on the board with his first career goal in the fifth minute, when Hofstra was whistled for a foul just outside the penalty area. Tchani stepped up and struck a bending ball into the left side of the net, past the outstretched arms of Pride goalkeeper James Winters.
Four minutes later, Tchani beat Winters again, this time with a hard, low shot for his second goal of the night. Fellow freshman Hunter Jumper and redshirt freshman Jimmy Simpson earned the assists on the play.
Hofstra got on the scoreboard in the 33rd minute on a Brett Carrington goal. Virginia bounced back, however, and Matt Mitchell scored in the 38th minute to preserve UVa’s two-goal lead. The play began with a long ball from Jumper, which was flicked ahead by Simpson to Mitchell, who finished far post.
Agorsor made the score 4-1 in the 77th minute, when he headed home a Neil Barlow corner kick. For Agorsor, it was his team-leading third goal of the season, while it marked Barlow’s first assist of 2008.
The Pride (1-2-1) pulled to within 4-2 in the 81st minute when Mitchell Demont fired a shot past Virginia goalkeeper Dan Louisignau off of assists by Justin Flood and Jamal Neptune. Hofstra would get no closer, however, and Virginia came away with its second-straight victory.
Louisignau finished with four saves in his fourth-straight start in goal. Pride goalkeeper James Winters had six saves in defeat.
The Cavaliers held a 14-9 advantage in shots, while each team took four corner kicks.
Virginia is back in action on Saturday, Sept. 13, at VCU. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
