CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The eighth-ranked Virginia field hockey team (6-1) defeated Louisville (3-2) by a score of 4-2 Sunday at the University Hall Turf Field. Four different Cavaliers scored, including first-year Floor Vogels, second-year Kaitlyn Hiltz, fourth-year Inge Kaars Sijpesteijn and fourth-year Lucy Meyers.

“We bounced back with two wins this weekend,” Michele Madison, Virginia head coach, said. “We built up our game a little and added another press and that seemed to work for us today. We stuck to the game plan.”

Vogels gave Virginia a 1-0 advantage when she scored on a penalty corner at 14:17. Hiltz pushed the ball out to Pein Hulsebousch, who tapped it over to Vogels for the goal. Hiltz then made it 2-0 less than three minutes later with her second goal of the season off an assist from first-year Paige Selenski.

“Paige, Traci (Ragukas), Lauren (Elstein) and Kaitlyn were really able to break free and pass early,” Madison continued. “We were able to get some good penetrations.”

Louisville got on the board at 24:08 when Tuli Lim dribbled past the Virginia defensive corps all the way into the circle and past Cavalier goalkeeper Devon Burnley.

At 26:52, UVa converted its second score off a penalty corner. This time Elstein pushed the ball out to Hulsebousch, who placed the ball in front of Kaars Sijpesteijn. It was the third goal of the year for the returning All-American. The Cavaliers led 3-1 at halftime.

“The key to the game was that we stuck to the game plan,” said Virginia associate coach Chris Spice. “We played simply and passed early. It was really a team effort and everyone made a contribution.”

Both teams added a goal in the second half. On yet another penalty corner opportunity seven minutes into the period, Kaars Sijpesteijn shot the ball that was saved off Louisville keeper Heather Bustanoby. However, Meyers was there to collect the rebound and put the ball in the back of the cage for her first goal of the season.

The Cardinals scored their second goal of the game at 61:17. Nikkie Auker tallied the score on a rebound after a shot and a Virginia save.

In the second half, UVa goalkeeper Amy Desjadon tallied a season-high nine saves. Burnley added one in the first half for a total of 10. Bustanoby, meanwhile, finished with 11 saves.

“She was tested, that’s for sure,” Madison said of Desjadon. “She kept Louisville off the goal on corners and that is her job. The corner defense played well today and that is something we will continue to work on.”

Louisville outcornered Virginia 11-7 marking the first time this season the opposing team has had more corner opportunities than the Cavaliers. UVa outshot U of L 22-15 in the game. Selenski and Kaars Sijpesteijn each led the way with four shots.

Virginia continues its homestand with a 6 p.m. contest Thursday against Virginia Commonwealth at the UHall Turf Field.
