NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Two members of the Virginia men’s tennis advanced on day one of the ITA National Indoor Individual Championships, hosted by Yale University. Michael Shabaz (Fairfax, Va.) and Jarmere Jenkins (College Park, Ga.) both won their first round matches on Thursday.

Shabaz opened play with a 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3) win over No. 8 seed Eric Quigley of Kentucky. It was the only upset of a seed in the first round. In the final set, Shabaz saved a match point against him before taking the decisive set in a tiebreaker. He plays Dennis Nevolo of Illinois in the second round.

Jenkins was the only freshman to reach the round of 16 at the event, the second national tournament of the year. In his first round match, he defeated No. 27 ranked Jordan Rux of Baylor 6-3, 6-2. He meets No. 5 seed Steve Johnson on USC in the second round.

The tournament continues Friday and runs through Sunday.
