Charlottesville – Virginia’s Lucy Meyers scored twice, once in each half, and the Cavalier defense surrendered no short corners and only one shot in the second half as Virginia defeated William & Mary 2-1 tonight at University Hall Turf Field. Meyers, who had notched one goal in her career before tonight, scored both of her goals on short corners as the No. 14/17 Cavaliers (4-2) held the Tribe (4-3) off the board for the second period to register the win.

The Cavaliers got on the board first as Abby Taylor sent a ball up the field on the right side of the pitch to Taylor Swezey, who gained the circle and passed the ball over to Kaitlyn Hiltz. Hiltz drew a short corner at the stroke mark. On the play, Inge Kaars Sijpesteijn sent a shot that was tipped to the boards by Meyers at 11:44, putting Virginia up 1-0.

With time winding down in the period, the Tribe gained a short corner that was turned aside by the Cavaliers, but a foul earned William & Mary a consecutive short. The Tribe was able to draw four more short corners before on the team’s sixth of the evening, Jessica Kacerek received a pass from the left and sent it back to Kim Hedley, who had injected the ball on the short. Hedley scored from just over the endline to tie the game at 34:16. The teams entered the break tied 1-1.

Ten minutes into the second half the Cavaliers drew a short corner after Taylor and Swezey worked a combination up the right side of the pitch. The initial shot went wide, but as the Tribe tried to work the ball out of the back, Taylor intercepted the pass and drew a second short corner. On the restart, Hiltz’ shot was saved by Tribe keeper Gwen Hunter, but the loose ball squirted over to Meyers, who stuck the ball over the endline for her second goal of the game at the 45:30 mark of the game.

Fifteen minutes later Amy Desjadon batted away a shot from the top of the circle to preserve the lead, and the Cavaliers went on to the victory over the Tribe.

Virginia returns to action on Sunday (Sept 16) as it hosts the Dukes of James Madison. Game time is 2 pm at University Hall Turf Field.
