Cavaliers Sweep NC State

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Virginia volleyball team (16-10, 11-6 ACC) swept NC State 3-0 Thursday in Raleigh, N.C. Game scores were 30-22, 30-16 and 30-16. Rookie Kendahl Voelker tallied a match-high 11 kills while fourth year Sarah Kirkwood finished with 10 and third year Shannon Davis added nine.

Virginia swept the Wolfpack for the second time this season and has recorded seven sweeps on the season.

After coming away with a game one victory, the Cavaliers stepped it up in even more in game two, registering a .424 hitting percentage. Meanwhile, NC State had nine kills and 13 errors in game two for a -.089 percentage.

Kirkwood paced the Cavalier defense with a match-high 17 digs to finish with a double-double performance. Melissa Caldwell tallied 13 digs and A.J. Cushman finished with 10. Katie Oakes also added six blocks in the winning effort, including two solo blocks.

Tara Hester pitched in seven kills for the Cavaliers, while Kelly Irvin finished with six and Oakes had five. Irvin posted 43 assists at setter.

Lauren Zaniboni led NC State (3-24, 0-17 ACC) with eight kills and Chrissy Zirpolo finished with seven kills and a team-best 12 digs.

Virginia is back in action at 6 p.m. Friday against North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C.
