Top Ranked Cavaliers Open Season With 7-0 Win Over W&M

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The top ranked Virginia men’s tennis team opened its 2008 season with a 7-0 win over No. 43 William & Mary Sunday at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. It marked the second consecutive season that the Cavaliers opened the season with a 7-0 win over the Tribe.
“This was a good match to get the season started,” said Virginia head coach Brian Boland. “William & Mary is a quality team and will a tough team to play as the year goes on. We are excited to have the season started and look forward to a challenging match at Illinois on Friday.”
The Cavaliers (1-0) jumped out to a 1-0 lead by grabbing the doubles point. The No. 17 ranked duo of Ted Angelinos (Athens, Greece) and Lee Singer (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) got Virginia started with an 8-2 win over Kavi Sud and Sebastien Vidal at No. 3 doubles. At No. 2 doubles, the No. 25 ranked team of Dominic Inglot (London, England) and Houston Barrick (Brentwood, Tenn.) broke a 4-4 tie by winning the last four games of the match to post an 8-4 win over Dominic Pagon and Richard Wardell. In a matchup of nationally ranked opponents at No. 1 singles, top ranked Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) and Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) scored a 8-6 win over No. 33 Alex Cojanu and Keziel Juneau.
In singles, the Cavalier advantage went to 2-0 as No. 12 ranked Huey completed a 6-0, 6-4 win over Pagon at No. 2 singles. Moments later, Barrick added to the lead as he finished his 6-4, 6-1 win over Alexander Zuck at No. 5 singles. Angelinos clinched the match with his win at No. 4, topping Wardell 6-4, 6-2. Devvarman, the nation’s No. 1 ranked player, extended his dual match singles winning streak to 11 matches as he defeated Cojanu 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 1 position. Singer recorded a win over Marwan Ramadan at No. 6 singles, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 and Sanam Singh (Chandigarh, India) topped Juneau in a superbreaker at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-7, 11-9, to complete the 7-0 sweep.
The win was Virginia’s 18th consecutive home victory, dating back to the 2005 season.
The Cavaliers return to action on Friday as they visit No. 8 Illinois. Match time at the Atkins Tennis Center in Urbana is 6 p.m.
