CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia women’s tennis team opened its 2008 dual match schedule by splitting a doubleheader at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. The Cavaliers defeated Richmond 6-1 in the nightcap after falling to Marshall 6-1 in the opener.

In the season opener, the Cavaliers were defeated by a strong Thundering Herd squad. Marshall took a 1-0 lead by taking the doubles point. Maggie Yahner (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Amanda Rales (Bethesda, Md.) scored an 8-4 win over Thaddea Lock and Isabell Raich at No. 2 doubles, but Marshall’s wins at No. 1 and No. 3 gave the Herd the opening point. Marshall used the momentum from doubles in singles, taking five of the six matches. Rales recorded Virginia’s only point, defeating Karolina Soor 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.

In the second match of the doubleheader, Virginia recorded its first win of the season, downing Richmond 6-1. The Cavaliers swept the doubles matches, with Yahner and Lindsey Pereira (Arlington, Texas) winning at No. 1 singles, Rales and Jennifer Stevens (Miam, Fla.) winning at No. 2 singles, and Lara Alexander (London, England) and Hampton Williams (Raleigh, N.C.) winning at No. 3 doubles. In singles, the Cavaliers got straight set wins at the top five positions, with Rales, Stevens, Pereira, Yahner, and Alexander positing victories.

The Cavaliers (1-1) continue their season opening homestand on Wednesday as they host No. 15 William & Mary. The match is slated for 4 p.m. and will be broadcast by ACC Select.
