NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The top-ranked Virginia men’s tennis team recorded its second road win of the weekend against a highly ranked opponent, downing No. 12 Notre Dame 5-2 at the Eck Tennis Pavilion. It marked the second top-12 opponent the Cavaliers have defeated away from home this season.

“Today we played a talented Notre Dame team right after an emotional win at Illinois on Friday,” said Virginia head coach Brian Boland. “We have played some outstanding teams on the road early in the season. We are looking forward to getting home and having a few good days of practice and work on some things we know we can improve on. The goal is to just continue to improve each day and we now must prepare for another tough weekend against VCU and Michigan.”

The Cavaliers (3-0) took the early advantage over the Fighting Irish (2-1) by sweeping all three doubles matches for a 1-0 lead. No. 25 ranked Dominic Inglot (London, England) and Houston Barrick (Brentwood, Tenn.) posted an 8-2 win over Andrew Roth and Stephen Havens at No. 2 doubles. At the No. 1 position, top-ranked Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) and Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) clinched the opening point for the Cavaliers with their 8-4 win over Sheeva Parbhu and Brett Helgeson. No. 17 ranked Ted Angelinos (Athens, Greece) and Lee Singer (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) completed the sweep with their 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles over Tyler Davis and Santiago Montoya.

In singles, Notre Dame drew even as Parbhu defeated Inglot 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. The Cavaliers retook the lead, 2-1, as Angelinos completed a 6-1, 6-3 win over Daniel Stahl at the No. 6 position. Sanam Singh (Chandigarh, India) gave Virginia’s its third point of the afternoon as he defeated David Anderson 7-5, 6-1 at No. 5 singles. The Cavaliers clinched the dual match at No. 1 singles, the day’s only matchup of nationally ranked players. Top-ranked Devvarman downed No. 11 Helgeson 6-4, 6-3 to make the score 4-1, in favor of Virginia. The Irish picked up a point at No. 4 singles as Havens rallied for a three-set win over Michael Shabaz (Fairfax, Va.). In the final match on the courts, No. 12 ranked Huey scored a 6-7, 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles over Roth.

The Cavaliers return home Friday as they host intrastate rival VCU, currently ranked No. 31 nationally. Match time at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club is 6 p.m. Admission is free.
