COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Virginia men’s tennis team returned to action after a two-week break to down No. 50 Maryland 7-0 Saturday afternoon at The Tennis Club of College Park. The win improves the Cavaliers’ record to 16-0 on the season (2-0 ACC) as they match the longest winning streak in school history.

“It was good to get out and compete again after a long break,” said Virginia head coach Brian Boland. “After the long layoff, and it being our first outdoor match, I thought we played extremely well. Give Maryland a lot of credit, they have improved a lot over the past year.”

Virginia took a 1-0 lead in the match by winning the doubles point. The duo of Sanam Singh (Chandigarh, India) and Michael Shabaz (Fairfax, Va.) scored an 8-1 win over Michael Coleman and Alex Aksanov at No. 3 doubles. After Maryland won at No. 2 doubles to draw even, the top ranked team of Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) and Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) sealed the doubles point for Virginia with an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles over Andrew Orban and Boris Fetbroyt.

In singles, the Cavaliers won all six matches in straight sets. Huey made the score 2-0 as he topped Orban 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Houston Barrick (Brentwood, Tenn.) downed Fetbroyt 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5 singles to make the score 3-0. Ted Angelinos (Athens, Greece) clinched the dual match for Virginia with his 6-0, 6-3 win over Aksanov at No. 6 singles. The victory was Angelinos’ 13th consecutive singles win as he remained undefeated in dual match play this year. Devvarman won his 18th consecutive singles match and his 23rd consecutive dual match singles victory, dating back to last season, with his 6-2, 6-2 win over Inbat at the No. 1 position. Singh ran his winning streak to 15 consecutive matches as he topped David Kwon 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. Shabaz completed the sweep with his 7-6, 7-6 win over Nickolai Nielsen at No. 4 singles.

The Cavaliers set the school record for consecutive victories at 16 in 2005 before falling to UCLA in the NCAA quarterfinals. Last season, Virginia matched that mark with a 16-match winning streak before falling to Georgia in the NCAA semifinals.

The Cavaliers will continue their four-match road trip on Wednesday as they visit intrastate rival Virginia Tech.
