BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia men’s tennis team recorded its school record 17th consecutive win with a 7-0 victory over Virginia Tech Wednesday afternoon at the Burrows/Burleson Tennis Center. The Cavaliers remain undefeated on the season at 17-0 overall and 3-0 in the ACC.
“Virginia Tech is a very good team and to beat them 7-0 here in Blacksburg is a good accomplishment,” said Virginia associate head coach Tony Bresky. “We have been working hard on just getting better each match and it appears that is happening. The doubles have certainly seen an improvement recently. We now look forward to this weekend with Georgia Tech and Clemson.”
Virginia took a 1-0 lead in the match by sweeping the doubles point. The top-ranked team of Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) and Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) downed Albert Larregola and Nicolas Delgado de Robles 8-2 at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2 doubles, Houston Barrick (Brentwood, Tenn.) and Dominic Inglot (London, England) clinched the opening point with an 8-6 win over Yoann Re and Sebastien Jacques. Sanam Singh (Chandigarh, India) and Michael Shabaz (Fairfax, Va.) completed the sweep with an 8-6 win over Brandon Corace and Alexandre Labrosse at No. 3 doubles.
In singles, the Cavaliers clinched the dual match with three quick straight set victories. Barrick cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win over Labrosse at No. 6 singles. In the only matchup of nationally ranked players, No. 1 Devvarman topped No. 55 Larregola 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 1 position. Ted Angelinos (Athens, Greece) clinched the dual match with his 6-3, 6-1 win over Corace at No. 5 singles. Singh extended the lead to 5-0 with his 6-2, 7-5 win over Jacques at No. 4 singles. Inglot defeated Re 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 at No. 2 singles and Huey topped Delgado de Robles 6-4, 6-7, 10-7 at No. 2 singles to complete the sweep.
The 17-match win streak sets a new Virginia record. The Cavaliers’ previous record of 16 was set in 2005 before falling to UCLA in the NCAA quarterfinals. Last season, Virginia matched that mark with a 16-match winning streak before falling to Georgia in the NCAA semifinals.
The Cavaliers will continue their four-match road trip on Friday as they visit Georgia Tech. No. 1 Virginia 7, No. 37 Virginia Tech 0
