WASHINGTON, D.C. – Megan Bloomer’s goal with 27.9 seconds remaining for the No. 6 Georgetown women’s lacrosse team proved to be the difference in a back-and-forth battle, as the Hoyas upset the fourth-ranked Cavaliers, 8-7, on Wednesday afternoon at Multi-Sport Field.

Junior Blair Weymouth led the Cavaliers in their final regular season road contest, notching four goals. Junior Ashley McCulloch had two points on a goal and an assist, while sophomore Kaitlin Duff and junior Jenny Hauser each had a goal. Senior Kaitlin Swagart finished with an assist.

Defensively, senior Kendall McBrearty came up with nine saves and two ground balls. Duff and senior Claire Bordley scooped up three ground balls each, and sophomore Brittany Kalkstein won two draw controls and caused three turnovers.

The Cavaliers won the loose ball battle, winning 15 of 25 ground balls, but Georgetown outshot Virginia by one, 25-24, and won 10 draw controls, compared to the Cavaliers’ seven. Hoyas goalkeeper, Caitlin Formby came up with 11 saves for Georgetown.

To open the game, McCulloch put the first point on the board 1:51 into play, with an assist from Swagart. Ashby Kaestner then evened the score at one apiece by 25:13. Wey Weymouth responded, making it 2-1 in favor of Virginia with her first of the game at 17:59.

Two straight from the Hoyas gave Georgetown their first lead of the game at 13:51, before Weymouth knotted the score at 3-3 with 12:23 left in the half. The remaining minutes were scoreless and the Cavaliers took just their second even score into the half this season.

Duff opened the stalemate firing a fast break goal into the net at 28:07 of the second half, but Georgetown responded with a score about a minute later to keep the game even. Weymouth and Hauser carried the Cavaliers to three straight scores, giving either team its largest lead of the game, with Virginia up 7-5 with 12:14 left to play.

Three unanswered goals for the Hoyas in the final 5:50 led Georgetown to the come-from-behind upset victory, though. Kaestner scored the first, her second on the afternoon, before Jordy Kirr made it two straight with 3:48 left. Bloomer then scored the game winner with just under 30 seconds remaining.

The Cavaliers (10-3, 4-1 ACC) will return to Charlottesville to close out the remainder of their regular-season schedule and the ACC Tournament. Virginia will play host to No. 16 Johns Hopkins this Sunday. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m., in Klöckner Stadium.
