CHARLOTTESVILLE – Top-ranked Virginia clinched its fifth consecutive ACC regular season title with a 5-2 win over NC State Friday afternoon in front of 584 fans at the Snyder Tennis Center. The Cavaliers improve to 24-0 overall and 10-0 in the ACC with the victory, while NC State falls to 11-12, 4-6 in the conference.

The Cavaliers overcame a slow start in doubles to sweep the three contests. Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) and Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) rallied from down an early break to top James McGee and Christian Welte 8-6 at No. 1 doubles. At the No. 2 position, Dominic Inglot (London, England) and Michael Shabaz (Fairfax, Va.) also came back from down a break to top Nick Cavaday and David Chermak 9-7. Lee Singer (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) and Ted Angelinos (Athens, Greece) completed the sweep with a 9-8 win over Jay Weinacker and Derek Stephens.

In singles, the Wolfpack drew even as Weinacker defeated Inglot 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 singles. Devvarman gave Virginia the lead again, 2-1, as he completed a 6-3, 6-2 victory over McGee at No. 1 singles. Houston Barrick (Brentwood, Tenn.) made the score 3-1 as he downed Chermak 6-0, 6-3 at the No. 6 position. Shabaz clinched the match for Virginia with a 7-5, 7-6 win over Stephens at the No. 5 position. In the final match on the courts, Huey topped Cavaday 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 at No. 2 singles.

The Cavaliers were coming off a week in which several members of the team missed practice due to the flu.

The Cavaliers conclude the regular season on Sunday as they host Wake Forest at 1 p.m. Following the match the senior class of Devvarman, Huey, Angelinos, and Andrew Downing (Virginia Beach, Va.) will be honored.
