Boland Named ITA National Coach of the Year

TULSA, Okla. – The Virginia men’s tennis team received to national awards from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association at a banquet Tuesday in conjunction with the NCAA Championships. Brian Boland was named ITA National Coach of the Year and Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) was named ITA/Farnsworth National Senior Player of the Year.

Boland led Virginia to the best season in school history. The Cavaliers finished the year 32-1 and reached the NCAA Semifinals for the second consecutive year. In February, the Cavaliers won the ITA National Team Indoor Championship, the first national team tennis title in ACC history. Virginia was ranked No. 1 in the ITA rankings every week of the season and won its fourth ACC Championship in the past five years.

Devvarman was named the best senior player in the country after being ranked No. 1 in both singles and doubles (with Treat Huey) every week of the season. On Wednesday he begins his defense of his NCAA Singles Championship. The No. 1 seed, he enters the tournament with a 38-1 singles record this season and currently is on a school-record 30-match winning streak. He and Huey are the No. 1 seed for the NCAA Doubles Championship, which begins Thursday.

Boland and Devvarman are the first Cavaliers to win their respective awards. Last season, Devvarman was the ITA National Player of the Year. That award is presented following the completion of the NCAA Singles Championship.
