Courtesy: VirginiaSports.com Michelle Vittese notched her first career goal Sunday against Providence, a 4-1 Virginia win.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The 11th-ranked Virginia field hockey team won its second straight game, a 4-1 win over Providence, Sunday at the UHall Turf Field. Four different Cavaliers scored on the day, including first-year Michelle Vittese, who notched her first career collegiate goal.

“Our goal is to get it right,” UVa head coach Michele Madison said. “We made simple passes and were able to build our attack. Things went better today, defensively too. There are still some holes, but we were able to create turnovers because of our pressure. We worked well off the ball.”

Vittese scored the first goal of the game on a penalty stroke after a Providence intentional foul was called inside the circle.

Virginia then went up 2-0 about 12 minutes later when second-year Haley Carpenter recorded her first goal of the season. Carpenter scored at 32:11 and was assisted by fourth-year Inge Kaars Sijpestein.

UVa led 2-0 at halftime. The Cavalier defense did not allow a Providence shot in the first half.

The Cavaliers added two more goals in the second half. Third-year Lauren Elstein tallied her second score of the season at 36:15 on an assist from Ragukas. Rookie Paige Selenski then rounded out the scoring effort less than two minutes later (at 37:26) on an assist from Vittese.

Providence scored its lone goal on its first shot of the game, at 50:04. Julie Ruggieri recorded the score on an assist from teammate Adrienne Marois.

Virginia outshot Providence 19-3 and had 14 shots on goal. All three of the Friars’ shots, meanwhile, were on goal. Selenski led UVa with five shots, all of which were on goal. The Cavaliers also recorded eight short corners, four in each half, to Providence’s three.

UVa goalkeepers Amy Desjadon and Devon Burnley split time in the cage. In the second half, Burnley tallied two saves.

The Cavaliers are back in action at 3 p.m. Friday at home against Vermont. All games are held at the UHall Turf Field and are free of admission.
