Retro Game Uniforms Available for Purchase

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Cavalier football team wore a special throwback uniform during Saturday’s home football game against Richmond. The uniform is modeled after the style worn by Virginia teams from 1984 to 1993.

Some of the jerseys and helmets worn by the student-athletes during the game are available for fans to purchase.

Saturday’s “Retro Game” celebrated a 10-year era of Virginia football from 1984 to 1993. During that time frame, UVa won 72 games and the school’s first ACC football championship, earned a No. 1 national ranking, and participated in six bowl games. The 1989 team will be recognized at halftime of the Retro Game.

Fans had two options to purchase authentic commemorative helmets and jerseys online at VirginiaSports.com.

Jersey numbers formerly worn by several Virginia football greats and a retro helmet are still available for purchase through an auction online at VirginiaSports.com beginning at 9 p.m. on Saturday, Sept 6. The jersey numbers available in the auction are: 1, 3, 6, 7, 12, 19, 21, 73, 85, 87, 89, and 91. Some numbers have duplicates and some were not be worn during the game against Richmond on Sept. 6. The auction schedule is listed below.

• Saturday, Sept. 6 at 9 p.m. - Tuesday, Sept. 9 at 2 p.m.: numbers 89, 89, 91, 7

• Tuesday, Sept. 9 at 2 p.m. - Thursday, Sept.11 at 2 p.m.: numbers 3, 3, 6

• Thursday, Sept. 11 at 2 p.m. - Monday, Sept. 15 at 2 p.m.: numbers 85, 85, 85, 87, 87

• Monday, Sept 15 at 2 p.m. - Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 2 p.m.: numbers 19, 21, 1

• Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 2 p.m. - Friday, Sept. 19 at 2 p.m.: numbers 12, 73, 73

The remaining jerseys and helmets were sold in the Cavalier Team Shop online at VirginiaSports.com on Sunday, Sept. 7 and Tuesday, Sept. 9. 

Fans may elect to add a plexiglass sports case to house the helmet for an additional $65 and a frame with matte for the jersey for an additional $200. If either of these options is selected, the buyer must pick-up his / her item(s) from the Sports Promotions and Marketing office in Bryant Hall at Scott Stadium.
