CHARLOTTESVILLE – No. 19 Virginia and Longwood tied, 2-2, Tuesday night at Klöckner Stadium. Jimmy Simpson scored the two goals for UVa, his fifth and sixth of the year.
With its first draw of the season, Virginia’s record went to 8-4-1, while Longwood’s record is now 6-5-2.
The teams played for more than 56 scoreless minutes, until Jonathan Villanueva sent a corner kick from the right side in the 57th minute that Simpson got his head on and finished.
Later in the half, in the 61st minute, Simpson found the back of the net again, this time on assists from Brian Ownby and Neil Barlow. Barlow’s cross was controlled by Ownby, who passed it to Simpson. Simpson then fired a shot from six yards out for his second goal of the night.
Longwood battled back, however, and scored its first goal in the 79th minute. Brian Germain fired a close-range shot which hit the post, and he controlled his own rebound and finished it to make the score 2-1.
In the 83rd minute, Longwood got the equalizer, as Nate Van Arsdale headed home a goal on assists from Shane Johnson and Germain.
In overtime, the Cavaliers had several chances but could not convert. Ross LaBauex had two shots on goal saved by Helmick in the second overtime, and Virginia had a goal called back due to an offsides call.
In goal for Virginia, Michael Giallombardo made two saves, while Longwood goalkeeper Joel Helmick had four.
Virginia out-shot Longwood, 14-9, and held a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks.
Virginia hits the road for its next match, a Saturday night contest at Duke. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
