CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 11 Virginia women’s soccer team closed out its 2008 regular season with a 1-0 loss to Wake Forest Sunday at Klöckner Stadium. Amy Smerdzinski’s goal in the 60th minute was the only score of the game as the Cavaliers fall to 12-4-2 overall and 6-3-1 in the ACC.

“For whatever reason, we weren’t sharp today,” said head coach Steve Swanson. “We didn’t move the ball as well as we normally do and we had a lot of unforced errors. There were few chances on either side, but give Wake credit that they were able to finish their chance.”

Neither team could mount much offense, but the Demon Deacons (12-6-0, 5-5-0 ACC) took advantage of a rare chance in the 60th minute. Allie Sadow sent a cross from the end line to Smerdzinski at the far post, who one-timed in a shot for the lone goal of the game.

Overall, Virginia had a 7-3 shot advantage and an 8-1 corner kick advantage in the game. Celeste Miles (Garland, Texas) had zero saves for the Cavaliers, while Laura Morse had one for the Demon Deacons.

“Honestly, the season really begins now,” said Swanson. “To have a chance to play this same Wake team again on Wednesday is all that we can ask for.”

The ACC Tournament bracket will be announced on Monday with action beginning at the WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. on Wednesday.
