CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Despite dropping the first set of the match, the Virginia volleyball team rebounded to win the next three-straight to claim a 3-1 (17-25, 26-24, 25-18, 25-22) victory, and season sweep, over the Maryland Terrapins. The win marks a second-straight for the Cavaliers, as they improve their record to 15-13 and 7-9 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The loss drops Maryland to 6-22 on the season and 2-14 in the league.
Fifth-year Beth Shelton (Cincinnati, Ohio) led the Cavaliers with her 12th career double-double. Shelton led all players with 17 kills and collected 11 digs, while fourth-year Shannon Davis (Austin, Texas) knocked down 12 kills and hit .458 for the match, while contributing a team-high five blocks.
Third-year Brittani Rendina (Lisle, Ill.) led all players with 22 digs. Third-year Lauren Dickson (Austin, Texas) contributed 12 and second-year A.J. Cushman (Richmond, Va.) tallied 11.
Fourth-year Marlow Bruneau (Lakeville, Minn.) dished out 26 assists and second-year Kelly Irvin (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) handed out 20.
For Maryland, Brittney Grove landed 13 kills and Maggie Schmelzle collected 16 digs. Mary Beth Brown blocked five attacks and Sharon Strizak distributed a match-high 39 assists.
The Cavaliers dug themselves into a hole early in the first set, falling behind 7-14. From there, Virginia was unable to muster any momentum, as Maryland cruised to a 25-17 victory.
With the score tied at 20 in the second set, Maryland took the lead and pulled ahead 24-21, forcing Virginia to call a timeout. Back-to-back kills by Shelton and another by Hill tied the score again at 24, before a block by Hill and Voelker gave the Cavaliers the advantage at 25-24. Out of a Maryland timeout, Bruneau landed a service ace to push Virginia ahead to, capturing a 26-24 win.
The Cavaliers pulled ahead early in the third set, taking a 15-8 lead and forcing Maryland to call a timeout. Virginia kept up its momentum for the rest of the set and finished with a 25-18 win.
After the score was tied at 6-6 in the fourth frame, the Cavaliers took a 10-7 lead, which they never relinquished. Maryland put together a late rally, but was unable to pull any closer than three as Virginia finished the match with a 25-22 victory.
Virginia will look to extend its win streak tomorrow night, playing Boston College at 7 p.m. in Memorial Gymnasium.
