November 20, 2009

• Lots of good stuff from the NCAA on the Division I Field Hockey Championship. Check out this feature story on Emmaus High School producing some of the top field hockey players in the country, not the metion a handful in the final four, including Virginia's own Rachel Jennings and Shelly Edmonds. There is another nice article on Virginia's bright young players including Paige Selenski and Tara Puffenberger, who have been teammates on three different teams.

November 16, 2009

• The Virginia men's soccer team soared to No. 2 in the Soccer America Top 25 Monday morning after winning the ACC Championship Sunday afternoon. The Cavaliers defeated No. 5 Maryland, No. 3 Wake Forest and No. 20 NC State en route to the conference crown. It is the highest national ranking for men's soccer since 2006.
• The UVa men's and women's lacrosse teams are holding a blood drive on Tuesday.  The event runs from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m., at the Lower Lobby of University Hall.  The event is facilitated by Virginia Blood Services.

"We have been involved with the good work of the Virginia Blood Services for a number of years now," said UVa men's lacrosse head coach Dom Starsia. "It is our pleasure to help and I would encourage everyone to stop by.  Giving blood is a simple exercise that does a lot of good."

"I think it’s great that both of our teams can come together at this time of year because blood is always a need," said UVa head women's lacrosse coach Julie Myers. "They always say Thanksgiving and holiday time is when they need the most blood on hand. So we’re happy to help out and be able to give back to the community."

• It's a baby boom for UVa wrestling. Five coaches associated with the program will welcome new additions to their families over the next five months – all girls. What are the odds? Head coach Steve Garland and his wife, English, started the baby boom on Tuesday, as they welcomed their second child. Check out the InterMat story here.
• Former Cavalier Ryan Zimmerman, now with the Washington Nationals, added to his postseason awards collection on Thursday when he was awarded the National League's Silver Slugger Award at third base. One of Zimmerman's closest competitors for the award was former UVa teammate Mark Reynolds of the Arizona Diamondbacks, who also had a career year.

• Former Cavalier Ryan Zimmerman has earned the National League's Rawlings Gold Glove Award at third base. He is the first former Virginia player to win the award and just the fourth player who competed in the ACC to earn the distinction. Mark Teixiera (Georgia Tech), Doug Mientkiewicz (Florida State) and Jason Varitek (Georgia Tech) are the others. Zimmerman is the first player from the ACC to win the award at third base.

• The NCAA Division I Field Hockey Selection Show airs tonight at 8 p.m. on NCAA.com. The 16-team field will be unveiled and the 18-3 Cavaliers will know their first-round matchup.
• The field hockey team also moved up one spot for a  No. 2 national ranking in both the NFHCA poll, released today, and the womensfieldhockey.com poll, released Monday.

• The College Baseball Blog is in the midst of listing its top 100 players in the country as part of its countdown to the 2010 baseball season. Yesterday it unveiled No. 85, UVa junior pitcher Robert Morey. Check out the blog's entry on Morey here.

• The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) released its men's soccer top 25 poll today and the Cavaliers moved up to No. 7. Goalkeeper Diego Restrepo was named ACC Co-Player of the Week for his shutout at No. 6 Maryland.
• The pairings for the 2009 NWCA All-Star Wrestling Classic have been announced. UVa 174-pounder Chris Henrich, ranked fourth nationally, will face No. 7 Stephen Dwyer of Nebraska on Nov. 22 at Cal State Fullerton. Henrich is just the third Cavalier wrestler to be invited to the prestigious event. The other two are coaching him – UVa head coach Steve Garland (2000) and associate head coach Scott Moore (2004).

• Men's soccer has won three-straight matches and travels to Maryland Saturday night for a 7:30 p.m. match. The Cavaliers moved up to No. 10 in this week's coaches poll and No. 12 in the Soccer America top 25. The NCAA also released its second version of the RPI, and Virginia is listed as No. 20.
• The UVa rowing team was featured on RowingNews.com after winning three events at the Head of the Charles on Oct. 17-18. Read the article and see the photo here.
• A lot of good coverage on Virginia women's basketball senior guard Monica Wright being named the ACC's Preseason Player of the Year. She is the first selection for the honor from Virginia since DeMya Walker in 1998. Current assistant coach Wendy Palmer earned the accolade in 1994 and 1995 and went on to win postseason player of the year both of those seasons. In the first-ever preseason player of the year poll (1991), Virginia's Dawn Staley was the honoree. • Four Virginia wrestlers are ranked in Amateur Wrestling News' preseason individual rankings. Chris Henrich tops the UVa wrestlers with a fifth-place rank at 174 pounds. Brent Jones is ranked No. 8 at 197, while Nick Nelson is ranked No. 14 at 141. Michael Chaires, coming off a redshirt season, is ranked No. 19 at 165 pounds. UVa's season opener is less than three weeks away – Nov. 7 at home vs. Anderson and Campbell.

• Virginia's nationally ranked men's and women's cross country teams host the Panorama Farms Invitational tonight, which will feature seven nationally ranked teams competing for the title. Races will begin at 4 p.m. and there will  be a clinic for children 12 and under held following the race, at approximately 5:15 p.m. Click here to read Jay Jenkins' preview of the event.

• The men's basketball team and coaching staff volunteered for two hours at the Habitat Store on Harris Street in Charlottesville today and completed a variety of tasks under the direction of Carla Mullen, the store's volunteer coordinator. Team members spread mulch, repaired a broken sliding door, painted a door, helped set up shelves to organize for an upcoming fundraiser and spackled a wall. Team member Jerome Meyinsse suggested the Habitat Store for a community project and made the initial contact.
• When the next version of The Golf Channel's "Big Break" debuts on Oct. 13, there is a former Cavalier in the field competing in the network's reality show. But it's not a former UVa golfer among this year's 12 participants. Instead it is a former UVa student-athlete who has earned Olympic Gold. Ed Moses, one of the greatest swimmers in Virginia history, will tee it up on this year's Big Break Disney Golf, competing for a spot to play in a PGA Tour event. • Charlottesville is ranked No. 89 in The Sporting News annual Best Sports Cities rankings. "Charlottesville's ranking is tied to how the Virginia fares in football and basketball. But given the kinds of college towns that serve as its primary competition on this list, Charlottesville's holding steady is no small accomplishment," said Sporting News chief of correspondents Bob Hille, who has coordinated the rankings since their expansion 13 years ago. • The Virginia field hockey team moved up one spot to No. 3 in the latest Kookaburra/NFHCA National Coaches Poll, which was released today. The 10-0 Cavaliers are off to their best start since opening up the 1979 season with a 12-0 mark. ACC schools in the poll include No. 1 Maryland (10-0), No. 2 UNC (10-0), No. 4 Wake Forest (7-2), No. 10 BC (7-2) and No. 13 Duke (5-4).

• The Virginia field hockey team moved up one spot to No. 4 in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association top-20 poll, released today. The undefeated Cavaliers are currently ranked behind a trio of ACC teams in No. 1 Maryland (8-0), No. 2 North Carolina (7-0) and No. 3 Wake Forest (6-1).
• Check out former Cavalier baseball player Mark Reynolds on the cover story of the USA Today sports section today. The Arizona Diamondbacks slugger has 42 home runs and 24 stolen bases this year to become the 11th player in MLB history to hit at least 42 homers and steal 24 bases in the same season. • "NCAA on Campus," a 30-minute TV show, was on Grounds today talking with field hockey player Lauren Elstein about living on the Lawn. They got footage of Lauren in class, at practice, and of course, on the Lawn. Look for it at 9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9 on CBS College Sports.

• Fear not Wahoo faithful who saw The Cavalier (Kim Kirschnick) take a tumble during Saturday's pregame ceremonies from his horse Sabre. • (6:30 p.m.): The Wahoo Blog is out at Klöckner Stadium, where a great crowd has already assembled for the so far 0-0 women's soccer match vs. West Virginia. The largest-ever crowd to watch a women's soccer match that preceded a men's game was 4,260 in 1996. Men's head coach George Gelnovatch's team kicks off at approximately 8 p.m. against Duke. Gelnovatch is up in the press box taking in the women's game before the Cavalier men begin warming up. The Charlottesville Daily Progress previews both matches here.

• Thursday Steve Marino finished the first round of the BMW Championship with a share of the first-round lead along with Rory Sabbatini. Both players shot 66. Follow Marino's run in the FedEx Cup race at www.pgatour.com.

• The Virginia volleyball team is in Lincoln, Neb., preparing for its first match of the Ameritas Players Challenge against No. 5 Nebraska tonight at 8 p.m. ET. In a semi-homecoming of sorts, head coach Lee Maes was a three-year assistant coach for the Cornhuskers before taking over Virginia’s program last year. Maes has already been greeted by many of his friends and supporters – some bringing cookies to the airport and some dropping by practice last night to say hello. • Rivals.com has some more love for the UVa baseball team, which opened its fall practice schedule on Monday. Kendall Rogers lists the Cavaliers among the teams with the fewest holes to fill this season. Check it out here. • The rowing team had a great day at the Charlottesville Women's Four-Miler! More than 60 members ran and the team donated more than $5,000 for breast cancer research. Here's a picture of the team from Saturday morning (and be sure to follow @UVARowing on Twitter!)

• UPDATE (12:41 p.m.): After a 2-0 weekend to open the season at the Portland Nike Invitational, the men's soccer team cracked the NSCAA Top 25 at No. 16 and Soccer America's Top 25 at No. 21. The Cavaliers were previously unranked in those polls, but No. 16 in the Soccer Times Top 25 and No. 22 in the College Soccer News poll. • More than 60 members of the UVa women's rowing team will compete in the Charlottesville Women's Four-Miler Saturday (Sept. 5) morning, beginning at 8 a.m. For the past 8 years, the UVa women’s rowing team has annually raised and donated more than $4,000, with hopes to contribute nearly $5,000 this year to help reach the event’s goal of $400,000. Good luck ladies!

• Virginia baseball outfielder Jarrett Parker has been named to Baseball America's Cape Cod League top prospect list for 2009. Parker was ranked No. 25 on the list.

• Former Cavalier tennis star Somdev Devvarman is making a name for himself at the US Open after his first round victory Monday. Long time Tennis Magazine writer Peter Bodo highlighted Somdev in his blog coverage of the Open.

• In other tennis news, former Cavalier women's player Amanda Rales has been named the new assistant coach at Princeton.

• The men's soccer team begins its regular season on Friday, Sept. 4, at the Nike Portland Invitational. In College Soccer News' preseason coverage, writer Joe Mauceri has named Brian Ownby an "Unsung Player To Watch in 2009". The Cavaliers were also called "The Team To Watch" in the ACC and freshmen Will Bates and Ahkeel Rodney were named "Freshmen To Keep An Eye On." Read about it all here.
