MILWAUKEE – Monica Wright finished with 31 points to lead No. 15 Virginia to a 76-71 victory over host Marquette at the WBCA Classic Saturday night at the Al McGuire Center. UVa concludes action at the tournament Sunday at 1 p.m. (CT) against Gonzaga.

"Credit both teams for a great game," Virginia head coach Debbie Ryan said. "We've been in tough atmospheres this year and we managed to come alive at the end."

Whitny Edwards added 13 points for Virginia (5-1), which won its third straight game. Aisha Mohammed just missed a double-double, netting nine points to go with 12 rebounds.

The Golden Eagles (5-1) lost for the first time in 11 games dating back to the end of last season, when they won their first WNIT Championship.

Marquette seemed in control when they led 53-39 after a 3-pointer by Ellis. But the Cavaliers stormed back to take the lead at 65-64 on a basket by Wright with 2:14 remaining.

Wright also hit two free throws with 34.9 seconds left for a 71-66 lead and the Cavaliers hung on to win.

Angel Robinson led Marquette with 25 points and Krystal Ellis added 23.

Virginia improved to 3-0 in the all-time series with Marquette, 2-0 at the WBCA Classic and 2-1 on the road this year.
