Charlottesville, VA -- South Carolina won the 2009 Cavalier Classic when the second round was not completed due to a lighting delay that lasted 1:45. Play was halted at approximately 3:30 p.m. and would not have been able to be resumed until 5:15 p.m. Tournament officials concluded the teams remaining on the course would not be able to complete play before darkness and the second round was canceled. The final threesome had 12 holes remaining to finish when play was halted. Final results were based on Saturday’s first round of play.

South Carolina, ranked No. 13 in the latest Golfstat standings, won the tournament with a team score of 2-under 286. Virginia, ranked No. 49 and the two-time defending champion, finished second at 292. Francis Marion was third at 294. The only other ranked team in the field, Augusta State, was fifth at 296.

Virginia was led by the 3-under 69 of Kyle Stough, who finished third overall, marking the second consecutive tournament he has led the Cavaliers in scoring. UVa’s Ben Kohles shot 73 and was 21st, Steven Rojas carded a 74 to place 28th while Will Collins finished 46th at 76 and Conrad Von Borsig was 67th at 78.

The Cavaliers have three individuals competing in the tournament that did not count toward the team score. Leading that group was Amory Davis who shot 70 to place fourth overall. Bruce Woodall carded a 71 and was ninth while Cole Willcox finished 46th with a 76.

UNC Wilmington’s Josh Brock took medalist honors at 5-under 67.

The Cavaliers will now await a berth to the 2009 NCAA Championships that will be announced the first week of May.
