CHARLOTTESVILLE – Highlighting the Virginia men’s soccer 2009 schedule will be a season-opening tournament in Portland, Ore., at least 13 home contests in Klöckner Stadium, including two preseason exhibitions, and match-ups with six opponents that advanced to last year’s postseason, head coach George Gelnovatch announced Tuesday.

Fresh off its second round NCAA Tournament appearance, the Cavaliers will play three preseason exhibition contests, two of which will be played in Charlottesville. Virginia hosts George Mason at Klöckner Stadium on Friday, Aug. 21 at 7 p.m., before traveling to Old Dominion for a second preseason match vs. the Monarchs on Monday, Aug. 24. The preseason wraps up at home, with the Cavaliers facing West Virginia on Saturday, Aug. 29 at 7 p.m.

To open the regular season, UVa travels to Portland, Ore., for a two-game tournament. Virginia faces host Portland on Friday, Sept. 4, and Washington on Sunday, Sept. 6.

The ACC schedule kicks off on Friday, Sept. 11, when Virginia hosts Duke at Klöckner Stadium. That game, scheduled to kick off at 8 p.m., will be part of a soccer triple-header, as the Virginia women’s soccer team hosts West Virginia at 6 p.m., and the Dartmouth and Seton Hall women’s programs square off at 3 p.m.

In non-conference action, Virginia hosts Mount St. Mary’s (Sept. 15), before traveling to Wake Forest on Friday, Sept. 18. UVa steps out of ACC play again on Tuesday, Sept. 22 at home against George Washington, before hosting conference foe Clemson on Saturday, Sept. 26.

A non-conference contest vs. VCU follows on Tuesday, Sept. 29, followed by a conference road game at North Carolina on Friday, Oct. 2.

Klöckner Stadium will be the site of two more non-conference matches on Wednesday, Oct. 7 vs. Longwood and Tuesday, Oct. 13 vs. Liberty. The Cavaliers will then travel to in-state and ACC rival Virginia Tech on Saturday, Oct. 17 for a 7 p.m. match.

Howard visits Klöckner on Tuesday, Oct. 20, followed by Boston College on Sunday, Oct. 25. The Cavaliers’ final road game will be a rematch of the 2008 ACC Championship title game, an Oct. 31 tilt at reigning NCAA Champion Maryland.

The regular season wraps up with home games against American (Nov. 3) and NC State (Nov. 7).

The 2009 ACC Tournament will be held Nov. 11-15 at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C.

Last season, Virginia had second-round appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
