The University of Virginia athletics department is giving fans of the program unique access and information through various social networking sites. With the popularity of social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, the department has incorporated the use of these tools for fan access and information distribution.
The primary source for news and updates about the Cavalier teams can be found at VirginiaSports.com.
Facebook
Facebook is the largest social networking site in the world. The Cavaliers launched a general athletics page in the spring of 2009 and has since seen over 8,000 Facebook users become fans of the page. Facebook offers a two-way fan experience, allowing fans to comment on posts from news about Virginia teams, fan polls and discussion topics. Facebook also offers Virginia fans unique content such as photo albums and video only found on Facebook.
To join Facebook, visit facebook.com to create a profile for yourself. Then search Virginia Cavaliers and become a fan of the official Virignia Cavaliers Athletics facebook page.
Twitter
Virginia launched on Twitter shortly before the 2009 baseball Regional. Twitter is a free blogging service, providing fans with updates of 140 characters or less. Virginia Sports (@VirginiaSports) on Twitter gives fans an insider's perspective from different UVa athletic events and early updates about what is happening in Virginia sports news.
UVa coaches are also creating their own Twitter pages giving fans an inside look at their programs. Coach Debbie Ryan (@CoachRyanUVA) gives fans updates about the day-to-day activities of she and her staff, camp updates and previews of upcoming women’s basketball news. Other coaches and teams such as Eileen Schmidt (@UVASOFTBALL), Lee Maes (@UVAVolleyball), and George Gelnovatch (@UVaMenSoccer) have all recently begun tweeting. Fans will receive updates through the Virginia Sports Twitter page as well as specific team sites during or shortly following team events to give fans information as fast as possible.

Get updates on your phone as well. Register your mobile device under settings on your profile. Then activate mobile updates on the VirginiaSports page under the latest entry.
YouTube
UVa has also created their own YouTube channel which distributes original Virginia content to fans including, Cavman videos, Cavalier close-ups from Cavalier Sports Weekly and press conferences. Subscribe to the virginiaathletics channel at youtube.com to watch the latest videos from Virginia Athletics.
These new mediums are taking Virginia sports to the next level in coverage. Updates are made as soon as possible in an effort to improve coverage of Virginia teams and create more fan involvement.
