CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Virginia volleyball team (2-2, 0-0 ACC) fell to Arkansas 3-0 Friday in the second match of the 2007 Marriott Jefferson Cup at Memorial Gymnasium. The Cavaliers stayed close in each of the three games, losing 30-27, 31-29 and 30-25.

The squad played without second year outside hitter Lauren Dickson, who was sidelined because of illness. Several teammates had battled the same illness earlier in the week as well.

"Given what happened this week, with the hospital visit and stomach flu, we played really well," head coach Melissa Aldrich Shelton said. "I am proud of our team for taking it to them. Arkansas is a good team but so are we. I would have liked to see us at 100 percent but unfortunately that is not the way the season works. But our team did a great job."

Virginia hit .174 for the match compared to a .231 percentage for the Lady Razorbacks, who improved to 4-1 on the year. Fourth year Sarah Kirkwood paced Virginia with 13 kills while teammate Shannon Davis added nine. Kirkwood also led the team in digs with 10 and fourth year Melissa Caldwell chipped in nine. Marlow Bruneau and Kelly Irvin shared the setting duties, recording 26 and 12 assists, respectively.

Beth Shelton also set a career high with five service aces against Arkansas.

Jessica Dorrell led the Lady Razorbacks with 13 kills while Ashley Miller recorded a game-high 16 digs.

The Marriott Jefferson Cup continues Saturday with Norfolk State and Virginia meeting at 1 p.m., following the 11 a.m. match between Arkansas and Temple. The Cavaliers will then take on the Owls at 7 p.m. to cap the annual tournament. The Spartans and Razorbacks will meet at 5 p.m. All matches are free to the public.

In action earlier Friday, Temple swept Norfolk State 3-0.
