CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia volleyball team remains undefeated in the Marriott Jefferson Cup, as the Cavaliers defeated Binghamton, 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-23), Saturday afternoon in Memorial Gymnasium.

Third-year Lauren Dickson (Austin, Texas) extended her streak of solid all-around performances, landing her fourth-straight double-double of 14 kills and 10 digs, while first-year Simone Asque (Chicago, Ill.) landed a personal-best 12 kills and led the team to a .231 hitting clip, hitting .364 herself.

Second-year Sydney Hill (Kalamazoo, Mich.) led the defensive effort, posting a career-high seven blocks, while third-year Brittani Rendina (Lisle, Ill.) dug a match-high 11 attacks to keep Binghamton’s attack percentage at .061 for the match. Second-year Kendahl Voelker (Fort Myer, Fla.) chipped in six blocks.

Fourth-year Marlow Bruneau (Lakeville, Minn.) and second-year Kelly Irvin (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) shared setting duties, dishing out 24 and 14 assists, respectively.

For Binghamton, Lindsey Mueller dished out 17 assists and Michele McDonough landed a team-high seven kills. Mueller and Katie Thomas dug eight attacks.

The Cavaliers started slow in the opening of the first set, falling behind 6-1 before rallying to even the score at 14 all, and pull ahead three at 17-14, forcing Binghamton to call a timeout. After a second Bearcat timeout, with the Cavaliers leading 20-17, Davis and Dickson took over, landing a combined five kills to lead Virginia to a 25-18 victory.

Virginia opened the second set on a 5-1 run. The Cavaliers then used a 7-3 streak in the middle of the frame to extend their lead, allowing the team to cruise to a 25-17 victory.

The Cavaliers started off the third set with a 12-6 lead, before Binghamton made a rally of their own, cutting Virginia’s lead to two, with a score of 13-11. Virginia then went on a 5-0 run in the middle of the set to pull ahead 18-11. The Bearcats responded with a late rally of their own, holding Virginia at set-point and tallying four straight points to bring the score to 24-23, before Dickson landed a kill to put the match away, at 25-23.

In the first match of the day, Virginia Commonwealth defeated Appalachian State, 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-18).

The next match of the day will feature Binghamton (3-6) and Virginia Commonwealth (4-4) at 4:30 p.m., with Virginia (6-2) hosting Appalachian State (2-7) in the tournament finale at 7 p.m.
