CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Despite the effects of Hurricane Hanna, Virginia’s men’s and women’s cross country teams opened their seasons Saturday morning at Panorama Farms with matching victories. In head coach Jason Vigilante’s first appearance with the Cavaliers, both squads swept the top-three spots, while also claiming fifth.

Third-year Trey Miller (Winston-Salem, N.C.) claimed first place for the men’s team, finishing the 8K race with a time of 24:53.80 to win his first-ever collegiate race. Sixth-year Ryan Foster (Stephens City, Va.) took second for Virginia in 24:56.88 and third-year Graham Tribble (Columbia, S.C.) crossed a second later, in 24:57.70, to lead the Cavaliers to a sweep of the top-three positions.

Duke’s Josh Lund finished fourth with fourth-year Kevin Tschirhart (Northport, N.Y.) rounding out the top-five, in 25:14.34. Second-year Robbie Eckardt (Kildeer, Ill.) rounded out the scoring for Virginia, with an eighth place finish in 25:21.36.

For the women, fourth-year Lauretta Dezubay (Bethlehem, Pa.) seemed unaffected by the rainy weather, starting off her last season with UVa by taking first place in the women’s 5K race with a time of 17:55.01. Dezubay’s finish was 15 seconds faster than her previous personal record and resulted in her first-ever collegiate victory.

Fourth-year Katie Read (Arlington, Va.) and third-year Stephanie Garcia (South Riding, Va.) rounded out the top three with times of 18:09.33 and 18:24.04, respectively. William & Mary’s Emily Arena took fourth with fourth-year Susan Brooks (Burke, Va.) finishing fifth, in 19:09.93. Second-year Lyndsay Harper crossed in seventh in 19:30.48 to complete the scoring for Virginia.

"I think the most important thing with our first competition is that we come away closer as a group,” head coach Jason Vigilante said. “We are becoming more connected with the future team goals and this was a great start to a long season."

Virginia will take the next few weeks to continue training before returning to the course on Sat., Oct. 4, at the George Mason Invitational in Fairfax, Va.
