CAREER • Enters season sixth in career wins at Virginia with 94 AT VIRGINIA: 2007-08 • Earned eight wins over NCAA Championships qualifiers: Phil Bomberger (Penn State), Ryan Goodman (NC State), A.J. Kissel (Purdue), Jesse Strawn (Old Dominion), Austin Trotman (Appalachian State), Christopher Honeycutt (Edinboro) and Lior Zamir (Penn – twice) • Qualified for NCAAs for third straight year and recorded two wins – both by fall – over Honeycutt and Zamir • Three of four losses came to NCAA qualifiers – Kirk Smith (Boise State), Raymond Jordan (Missouri), Tyrel Todd (Michigan) • Ranked No. 12 by InterMat in final rankings • Ranked as high as No. 7 (InterMat) during the season • Earned second-consecutive ACC title at 184 pounds and notched All-ACC honors for third time • With two wins at ACC Championships, he passed former Cavalier and current coach Steve Garland for sixth in wins all-time at UVa • His 39 wins and 13 falls are most in school history for a junior • Two-time ACC Wrestler of the Week (Nov. 13, Feb. 12) • His thirteen falls in 2007-08 are tied for third most in single season in UVa history • Won Bearcat (11/10) and Nittany Lion (12/2) opens • Took second at Southern Scuffle (12/30)
2006-07 • Qualified for NCAA Championships after winning ACC championship at 184 • Defeated NC State’s Jeremy Colbert to capture ACC title, despite wrestling with injured knee • Posted 31-9 record, including 11-2 mark in dual meets, and finished second on team in wins • Notched team-high seven major decisions as well as four falls • Received team’s Most Outstanding Wrestler award along with Eric Albright • Won Cleveland State Open (12/18), defeating Penn State’s Mike Ward in finals • Finished fifth at Southern Scuffle (12/30), posting three major decisions in tourney • Took eighth at Cliff Keen Invitational (12/2) • Recorded falls over John Campbell (Liberty - 11/11), Zack Giesen (Stanford - 12/1), Cody Reitmeier (Findlay - 12/18) and Jim Martin (George Mason - 1/6) • Dropped 3-2 decision to Missouri’s Raymond Jordan at NCAA Championships before taking medical forfeit in next round • Missed nearly a month of action near end of season with injured knee
2005-06 • Redshirted the season after making the move up in weight class to 184 pounds • Wrestled at 184 pounds in open tournaments, finishing with a 22-4 record, including eight pins and six major decisions
2004-05 • Qualified for NCAA Championships at 174 pounds • Recorded second-most wins on team after posting record of 24-13 overall, 9-5 in dual matches • Named to ACC All-Tournament Team after finishing second at ACC Championships • Named ACC Wrestler of the Week after finishing first at 2005 Virginia Intercollegiates and recording 14-4 major decision over VMI’s Jeff Sale in Rumble on the River • Competed at 2005 University National Championships • Placed first at Body Bar Invitational, going 4-0 with 15-1 major decision over Edinboro’s Chris Bala • First collegiate fall came in his first match at Virginia when he pinned Appalachian State’s A.J. Foreman at 6:33 (11/13) • Started his collegiate career with seven consecutive wins (11/13-12/3) and went 11-1 in first 12 matches, including three falls • Posted 3-1 dual record against ACC competition • Also registered falls against CS Bakerfield’s Jason Carrasco at 6:09 (12/3), George Mason’s Nick Webster at 4:56 (1/8), North Carolina’s Alex Maciag at 2:16 (1/21) and Kent State’s Ardian Ramadani at 1:35 (1/29).

MARY HIGH SCHOOL • Ohio state champion in 2004 and runner-up in 2003 • Two-time Junior National Greco-Roman All-American - placed fifth in both 2003 and 2004 • Two-time Junior National Freestyle All-American - placed first in 2003 and seventh in 2004 • Two-time Sectional Champion District Champion and state qualifier • The Medina, Summit and Portage County Wrestler of the Year • Named Touchdown Club Wrestler of the Year • Earned four letters in wrestling, two in football and two in cross country at SVSM
PERSONAL • Born Oct. 10, 1985, in Akron, Ohio • Son of Gino and Kim Caponi • His father wrestled at Akron and later served as Zips’ head wrestling coach • Enjoys reading, bike riding, listening to music and has an interest in anime cartoons and comic books • Has two brothers, Angelo and Marco, and one sister, Sarina • Brother Angelo wrestled for Mercyhurst College • Chose Virginia for its academic standards and friendly atmosphere.
