CHARLOTTESVILLE – The 18th-ranked Virginia men’s soccer team fell to No. 14 SMU Sunday in the final game of the Virginia Soccer Classic, 3-1, at Klöckner Stadium. Freshman Chris Agorsor netted his first career goal for the Cavaliers (0-2-0) in the second half.

“It’s frustrating when you lose two games, but we did have chances and opportunities to win both games,” Virginia head coach George Gelnovatch said. “I know we are a good team and we are confident that we will get going.”

SMU got on the board when Gabe Arrendondo finished a through ball from Arthur Ivo in the 33rd minute.

With a 1-0 lead in the second half, the Mustangs (2-0-0) added two more goals within a five-minute span. In the 68th minute, Dane Saintus scored on assists by Arrendondo and Paulo da Silva, and then returned the favor to da Silva in the 72nd minute by assisting on his goal.

Agorsor gave the Cavaliers their goal when he one touched a cross by Matt Mitchell into the back of the net. Mitchell received the ball from freshman Brian Ownby, who got his first-career point with the second assist.

Dan Louisignau started in goal for Virginia, and had four saves. In goal for SMU, Craig Hill had five saves.

In the earlier match of the Virginia Soccer Classic, St. John’s defeated Old Dominion, 2-0, on goals by Nelson Becerra and Adam Himeno. Neal Kitson registered his second shutout of the tournament in goal for the Red Storm.

Virginia returns to the pitch on Friday, Sept. 5, for a road match at George Mason. Kick-off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
