CHARLOTTE, N.C. - On day two of the Charlotte 49er Classic, sophomore Stephen Finley and freshman All-American Emil Heineking won their respective events, while 11 other Cavaliers placed in the top-eight of their events. Seven Cavaliers have also qualified in their respective events for tomorrow’s finals and sophomore Ayla Smith and Heineking met an NCAA Regional mark in their respective events

“I felt today was a solid day across the board,” head coach Randy Bungard said. “It was a chance for us to see where we are in our training and what effects that training is having on us. It was nice to see Ayla and Emil get the regional marks out of the way, and I look forward to a lot of finals tomorrow and getting some more of those regional marks out of the way.”

Finley led all runners in the 1500m for first place, in 3:51.18, while Heineking won the 5000m in 14:11.40. Sophomore Chris Clark and freshman Ryan Collins also finished the 1500m in fourth and eighth, respectively, while junior Kevin Tschirhart finished third in the 5000m. Clark finished in a personal-best 3:54.57 and Collins crossed the line in 3:57.73. Tschirhart finished the long distance event in 14:55.36.

Freshmen Adams Abdulrazaaq and Greg Nelson also put in top performances in today’s finals. The duo finished second and third, respectively, in the decathlon. Abdulrazaaq collected 6227 points, while Nelson finished with 5950.

Sophomores Stephanie Garcia and Kathleen Darraugh, junior Alexa Manning and senior Katie Tershel each took fourth in their events, while senior Suzanne Ginnow and junior Amy Bilmanis finished eighth in their finals.

Garcia and Ginnow each placed in the 1500m, with Garcia crossing the line in 4:37.52 and Ginnow in 4:41.08.

In field events, Manning took fourth in the hammer with a throw of 47.51m and Darraugh finished fourth with a 3.65m vault in the pole vault. Tershel finished fourth in the long jump with a leap of 5.55m, while Bilmanis threw the eighth longest throw in the discus, at 43.38m.

Smith, who finished first in the 400m hurdles and fourth in the 100m hurdles, led today’s preliminary events. Freshman Kristina Chapman, sophomore Hilary Moen and junior Lauren Echko will join Smith in the finals of the two events.

Smith finished the 400m hurdles in a personal-best and provisional qualifying time of 1:00.51 for the top finish and Chapman finished second in 1:03.27. Moen also finished in the event, taking seventh in a personal-best time of 14.25. In the short hurdles, Smith finished in her best time of 14.25, while Echko finished right ahead of her in a time of 14.17, good for third place.

Senior Janne’a Bridgeford and freshman Conlon Bonner rounds out those moving on to tomorrow’s finals, as they both finished in the top-eight of the 200m dash. Bridgeford finished in third in 24.12 and Bonner put in a time of 21.67.

All-American Brian Lee finished the 400m dash in a personal-best 49.26.

Tomorrow will wrap up the final day of events, with field events beginning at 10 a.m., before the 4x100m relay will kick off events on the track at 11 a.m. The men’s 4x400m relay is scheduled as the final event, set to begin at 4:40 p.m. Live stats can be found on www.flashresults.com.
