Ayeni Wins Discus Title at Prestigious Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Friday, the second of four days in the Penn Relay meet, featured 20 Cavaliers performing in 13 events, placing in the top-eight finishers in four events.

The men’s field team performances were highlighted by Yemi Ayeni’s first-place finish in the discus with an NCAA Regional qualifying throw of 57.65m. The last time a Cavalier won an event at the Penn Relays was Anne Crouse in1999 with a victory in the javelin. Ayeni was the first on the men’s squad to win an event since Frank Fuller won the 110m hurdles in the 1940 relays.

The day was additionally marked by Marcus Robinson’s fifth-place finish in the long jump with a 7.21m performance. Eric Pickle participated in the men’s discus event and threw a personal-best 50.31m.

The men’s 4x100m team of Conlon Bonner, Reuben Jones, Brian Lee and Adams Abdulrazaaq ran an NCAA Regional qualifying performance of 40.66. The men’s sprint medley team of Bonner, Jones, Meikle Paschal and Jordan Orr finished their race in 3:24.62 while the distance medley team of Lee, Andrew Lobb, Mike Hagos and Steve Finley finished with a time of 3:24.62.

On the field for the women, Katie Tershel and Rashawnda James participated in the triple jump competition and Amy Bilmanis participated in the discus throw. Tershel jumped 12.04m and James jumped 12.19m. Bilmanis placed seventh in the discus throw with a 46.91m.

On the track, the 4x200 team of Talia Wise, Janne’a Bridgeford, Kristina Chapman and Rashawnda James finished in an ECAC-qualifying time of 1:36.41. In the sprint medley relay, Wise, Bridgeford, and Chapman were joined by Huma Husain for a seventh place finish with a time of 3:55.10.

Saturday, the Penn Relays continues at the University of Pennsylvania with the men’s triple jump at 11 a.m.
