Thompson, No. 15 Baseball Earn 10-1 Win over Virginia Tech

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Riding a complete-game seven-hitter from Jacob Thompson (Jr., Danville, Va.), the Virginia baseball team knocked off Virginia Tech, 10-1, Friday night in front of a season-high crowd of 2,157 at Davenport Field. Thompson (4-0) did not issue a walk while striking out five as he added to his school-record wins total with his 25th career victory.

Thompson was supported by 10 runs and 10 hits from the Virginia offense. Dan Grovatt (Fr., Tabernacle, N.J.), Jeremy Farrell (Jr., Westlake, Ohio) and David Coleman (Fr., Richmond, Va.) all recorded two hits, while David Adams (Jr., Margate, Fla.) hit his fourth home run of the season. Farrell and Jarrett Parker (Fr. Stafford, Va.) each drove in two runs.

Josh Wymer (2-4) took the loss for the Hokies after giving up seven runs (six earned), five hits and five walks in 4.1 innings. He struck out three.

Thompson proved to be even tougher when runners reached base. In two instances he gave up a leadoff triple to Jose Cueto but wiggled out of both situations without allowing the run to score.

Virginia (21-5, 6-4 ACC) scored in the opening inning on Adams’ two-out solo home run, then tacked on another run in the third on a Farrell infield single to plate Adams.

Virginia Tech (8-16, 0-10) cut the lead in half in the fourth inning on a Anthony Sosnoskie grounder that scored Ty Hohman, but the Cavaliers answered with two in their half of the fourth. Tyler Cannon (So., Pigeon Forge, Tenn.) singled to score Parker, and Greg Miclat (Jr., Concord, N.C.) came home on a Wymer balk.

In the fifth, the Cavaliers crossed the plate three times to push the margin to 7-1. Farrell tripled to score Grovatt, and Coleman soon followed with a single to score Farrell. Miclat added a sacrifice fly to bring Franco Valdes (So., Miami, Fla.) home.

Virginia continued to pile on in the seventh inning with a two-run double from Parker and then finished its scoring with a run in the eighth inning, as J.C. Poma (Fr., Glen Allen, Va.) made his first appearance as a Cavalier and singled to plate Grovatt.

The Cavaliers and Hokies continue their series at 1 p.m. Saturday. The game will be televised regionally by RSN. Virginia’s Pat McAnaney (Sr., Syracuse, N.Y.) is scheduled to take the mound against Virginia Tech’s David Cross.
