CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – David Adams (Jr., Margate, Fla.) went 4-for-4 while Pat McAnaney tossed six strong innings to lead the Virginia baseball team to a 12-2 win over Cornell Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader at Davenport Field. The Cavaliers (8-0) play Siena at 3 p.m. today in the second half of their doubleheader.

McAnaney struck out a career-high 11 batters in earning his first win of 2008. He pitched six innings, allowing two earned runs, six hits and a walk. Jake Rule (Sr., Waynesboro, Va.) tossed three scoreless innings to notch his first save at Virginia.

At the plate, the Cavaliers racked up 18 hits, as Adams went 4-for-4 with two doubles and tied a career high with five RBI. Dan Grovatt (Fr., Tabernacle, N.J.) went 3-for-4, while Jeremy Farrell (Jr., Westlake, Ohio) homered and drove in two. Tyler Cannon (So., Pigeon Forge, Tenn.) scored three times.

Virginia jumped on the Big Red (1-1) early, scoring three times in the first inning. Cannon coaxed a one-out walk and stole second on the next pitch. He came home on an Adams single. Farrell followed with a two-run homer into the trees in left-center field to give UVa a 3-0 advantage.

The Cavaliers tacked on a run in the third inning, as Cannon tripled off the base of the wall in left-center field with one out and Adams drove him home with a sacrifice fly.

Cornell sliced the lead in half in the fourth inning on run-scoring singles from Nathan Ford and Scott Hardinger.

Virginia responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth on a single by Corey Hunt (So., Charlottesville, Va.) to score Grovatt. UVa padded its lead with four runs in the sixth inning, highlighted by a two-run double by Miclat and a two-run single by Adams.

Virginia scored a run in the seventh and two in the eighth to push the score to 12-2.
