RALEIGH, N.C. – Phil Gosselin (Fr., West Chester, Pa.) hit a two-run home run in the 10th inning to propel the Virginia baseball team to a 5-3 win over NC State Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader at Dail Field. The home run was part of a wild win for the Cavaliers, who rallied from an early 2-0 hole and survived a ninth-inning comeback by the Wolfpack that sent the game to extra innings and another threat in the 10th inning.
The marquee matchup of starting pitchers Jacob Thompson (Jr., Danville, Va.) and NC State’s Eric Surkamp was all that is was billed to be. Thompson, after a rough first inning, settled down to go 6.1 innings, allowing two earned runs, five hits and two walks while striking out eight.
Surkamp matched him throughout, going six innings and surrendering two earned runs, eight hits and a walk while striking out six.
Michael Schwimer (Sr., Alexandria, Va.) earned his first win of the year after pitching the final two innings for Virginia. Drew Taylor (0-1) took the defeat for NC State.
Greg Miclat (Jr., Concord, N.C.) and David Adams (Jr., Margate, Fla.) each recorded three-hit games for the Cavaliers, who notched a dozen hits in the game.
Thompson struggled out of the gate, as the Wolfpack touched him up for two runs in the first inning on a two-out, two-run single by Marcus Jones singled to right-center field to score Nick Stanley and Pat Ferguson.
Virginia sliced the lead in half in the fourth inning. Miclat led off with a single but was promptly picked off. Tyler Cannon (So., Pigeon Forge, Tenn.) then walked and moved to third on an Adams single. Farrell followed with a double to the right-field corner to score Cannon, but Adams was thrown out at the plate to keep the score at 2-1.
The Cavaliers tied the score in the sixth inning. Miclat, Cannon and Adams hit consecutive singles to load the bases with no outs, and Jeremy Farrell (Jr., Westlake, Ohio) brought home Miclat when he grounded into a 5-4-3 double play.
UVa forged ahead in the seventh inning against reliever Joey Cutler. David Coleman (Fr., Richmond, Va.) was hit by a pitch to lead off and stole second an out later. He scored when Grovatt singled up the middle.
NC State rallied with a run in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extra innings. With one out, Joe Florio walked and moved to second on a wild pitch. He scored on pinch-hitter Domonique Rodgers’ single off the glove of a diving Farrell at first.
Virginia responded in the 10th as Adams singled with one out and after Farrell flied to the warning track in right center field, Gosselin launched his first career home run over the high wall in left field to give UVa the lead back.
