RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State’s Clayton Shunick and Jimmy Gillheeney combined on a three-hit shutout as the Wolfpack topped Virginia 2-0, at Doak Field at Dail Park, handing the Cavaliers their first loss in 12 games this season. The game was the second of a doubleheader – Virginia won the first contest, 5-3 in 10 innings.

Virginia starting pitcher Pat McAnaney (Sr., Syracuse, N.Y.) took the hard-luck loss and dropped to 1-1 this season. He allowed just two runs, six hits and two walks while striking out four in seven innings. Kevin Arico (Fr., Flemington, N.J.) pitched a scoreless eighth inning out of the bullpen.

NC State (7-3, 1-1) did all of its damage in the second inning, as Drew Martin hit a two-out, two-run double to score Russell Wilson and Tommy Foschi. Wilson had two hits in the game – the lone player on either team with more than one hit.

That was all the support Shunick needed, as he fired eight innings and struck out a career-best nine batters. He gave up three hits and walked just one. Gillheeney pitched a perfect ninth for his second save.

David Adams (Jr., Margate, Fla.), Tyler Cannon (So., Pigeon Forge, Tenn.) and Jarrett Parker (Fr., Stafford, Va.) each had a hit for Virginia. Virginia left eight men on base, and left the bases loaded in the fourth inning and two runners on in the fifth and sixth innings.

The teams conclude the three-game series at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
