RALEIGH, N.C. – The Virginia baseball team dropped a 4-2 decision against NC State Sunday afternoon in the rubber game of a three-game series at Doak Field at Dail Park.
Andrew Carraway (Jr., Marietta, Ga.) pitched six innings and allowed three runs (one earned), two hits and two walks while striking out seven. He took the loss and fell to 2-1 this season. Eryk McConnell (2-0) tossed six innings for NC State and gave up two runs (one earned), four hits and two walks while striking out four. Jimmy Gillheeney closed the game out for his third save.
At the plate, the Cavaliers (11-2, 1-2 ACC) were held to four hits, while NC State (8-3, 2-1) also had four. The game was sloppy, with each team committing three errors.
For the first time in the series, Virginia scored first as Phil Gosselin (Fr., West Chester, Pa.) stroked a double off the left-center field wall in the second inning to plate Jeremy Farrell (Westlake, Ohio).
The Wolfpack took advantage of Cavalier miscues to score two unearned runs in the fourth inning. Dallas Poulk reached on an error to lead off and moved to third as NC State loaded the bases with no outs. A sacrifice fly by Jeremy Synan scored Poulk and moved Nick Stanley to third and a fielder’s choice by Pat Ferguson brought Stanley home.
Virginia tied the score in the sixth inning on a two-out double by Dan Grovatt (Fr., Tabernacle, N.J.) to score David Adams (Jr., Margate, Fla.), but NC State quickly answered as Poulk launched Carraway’s first offering in the bottom of the inning over the right-field wall for a solo home run.
NC State tacked on a run in the seventh inning when Poulk drew a bases-loaded walk against UVa reliever Robert Morey (Fr., Virginia Beach, Va.).
Virginia returns home for two midweek games this week. The Cavaliers play Radford Tuesday and Navy Wednesday, with both games starting at 4 p.m. at Davenport Field.
