CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. Jeremy Farrell’s grand slam broke a 4-4 tie and capped a five-run fifth inning as the No. 19 Virginia baseball team finished off a sweep of Boston College Sunday with an 8-6 victory over the Eagles at Davenport Field. The win was Virginia’s 17th straight at home, which sets a school record.

Matt Packer (So., Germantown, Tenn.) earned the win in relief and moved to 3-0 on the season. He pitched three scoreless innings and allowed four hits and a walk while striking out three. Michael Schwimer (Sr., Alexandria, Va.) tossed the final 1.1 innings and struck out three to record his sixth save.

James MacDonald (2-3) started for Boston College and took the loss after pitching 4.1 innings and giving up six earned runs, six hits and three walks while striking out three. Virginia starter Andrew Carraway (Jr., Marietta, Ga.) went 3.0 innings and gave up four earned runs, five hits and two walks while striking out four.

At the plate, Dan Grovatt (Fr., Tabernacle, N.J.) went 3-for-3 and scored three times, while Farrell had two hits and drove in four. Phil Gosselin (Fr., West Chester, Pa.) drove in two runs. Garret Smith had three hits to lead the Eagles.

Virginia (19-4, 5-4 ACC) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a Gosselin groundout to score Grovatt, but Boston College (9-11, 2-7) came right back with four runs in the third inning. Smith tied the game with an RBI single and Tony Sanchez followed with a run-scoring single. A sacrifice fly by Eric Campbell pushed home another run, and Mickey Wiswall tacked on an RBI double to give BC a 4-1 advantage.

The Cavaliers scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the lead to 4-3, as Gosselin stroked a run-scoring single and Franco Valdes (So., Miami, Fla.) drove home a run on a fielder’s choice.

In the fifth inning, David Adams (Jr., Margate, Fla.) hit a single to score Greg Miclat (Jr., Concord, N.C.) to tie the score at four. UVa loaded the bases when Grovatt singled against reliever Pat Dean, and Farrell followed with a blast over the wall in right-center field for his fourth home run of the season and the Cavaliers’ first grand slam since Brandon Guyer hit one against George Mason on March 27, 2007.

Boston College sliced the lead in half in the eighth inning on a John Spatola two-run home run, but Schwimer came on to pitch the final 1.1 innings and slam the door for Virginia’s fifth straight win.

Virginia continues its 12-game homestand Tuesday at 5 p.m. against VCU.
