No. 16 Baseball Whips Georgetown, 9-1

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Dan Grovatt (Fr., Tabernacle, N.J.) tied a career high with four hits in the Virginia baseball team’s 9-1 win over Georgetown Tuesday night at Davenport Field. Four Virginia pitchers combined on a four-hitter as the Cavaliers rolled to the win.

Virginia starting pitcher Jacob Thompson (Jr., Danville, Va.), who was on a low pitch count in order to get some extra work, earned the win with three strong innings. Thompson (5-2) allowed just two hits, struck out two and needed only 28 pitches to cruise through his three-inning stint.

Jake Cowan (Fr., Roswell, Ga.), Jake Rule (Sr., Waynesboro, Va.) and Robert Poutier (Sr., Yorktown, Va.) combined to allowed just a run, two hits and three walks over the final six innings. Georgetown starter Erick Chandler (0-4) took the loss after allowing six earned runs, seven hits and a walk in two innings.

Grovatt went 4-for-4 with three doubles and three RBI, while Tyler Cannon (So., Pigeon Forge, Tenn.) doubled twice and drove in three. David Adams (Jr., Margate, Fla.) added a two-run home run and scored twice, as the trio combined to go 7-for-13 with five runs scored and eight RBI.

Virginia (32-11) struck quickly with a run in the first on Grovatt double to plate Greg Miclat (Jr., Concord, N.C.). The Cavaliers then put a five-spot on the scoreboard in the second inning, with all the runs coming with two out. After UVa loaded the bases with two out, Cannon stroked a bases-clearing double to left-center field. Adams followed with his sixth home run, a two-run blast to left field.

After the teams sat through a 26-minute rain delay in the middle of the fourth inning, the Cavaliers added another run in the bottom of the fourth. Cannon doubled with one out and a batter later, Grovatt singled on an 0-2 pitch to bring Cannon home with the seventh UVa run.

The lead ballooned to nine in the sixth inning as Grovatt doubled to score Adams and Jeremy Farrell (Jr., Westlake, Ohio) hit a sacrifice fly to plate Grovatt.

Georgetown (14-24) tallied its lone run in the seventh inning on a Kelly Muir groundout to score Matt Harrigan.

Virginia is back at Davenport Field Wednesday night as it battles William and Mary at 6 p.m.
