CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia baseball team pushed its record to 5-0 with an 11-1 victory over William and Mary Tuesday at Davenport Field. UVa pitchers combined to allow just an unearned run and three hits and now have surrendered just one earned run and 22 hits in five games this season (0.20 ERA).

Will Roberts (Fr., Richmond, Va.) was brilliant in his first college start, tossing five innings and allowing just three hits and a walk while striking out eight as he earned his first win. Roberts' eight strikeouts were the most by a Cavalier freshman in his first start since Andrew Carraway recorded nine vs. VMI on April 18, 2006. The Cavalier bullpen of Tyler Wilson (So., Midlothian, Va.), Kevin Arico (So., Flemington, N.J.), Sean Lucas (R-Fr., Fishkill, N.Y.) and Matt Packer (Jr., Germantown, Tenn.) pitched four hitless innings to wrap up the game.

William & Mary starting pitcher Tim Norton took the loss after allowing six earned runs, four hits and four walks in two-plus innings.

At the plate, Virginia racked up 13 hits. Jarrett Parker (So., Stafford, Va.) and Phil Gosselin (So., West Chester, Pa.) each had two hits and three RBI. John Barr (So., Ivyland, Pa.) had two hits and scored three times, while Steven Proscia (Fr., Suffern, N.Y.) continued his strong start to the season with a 2-for-3 effort while scoring twice and driving in two.

Virginia took advantage of Norton’s wildness in the second inning to bat around and score four times. After recording an out to start the inning, Norton then walked the bases loaded. Barr hit the first pitch he saw into left-center for a single, scoring Proscia and Cannon. Corey Hunt (So., Charlottesville, Va.) moved the runners up with a sacrifice bunt, and Parker then beat out an infield single to score Valdes. Gosselin then ripped a shot off the glove of Norton for an infield single to plate Barr and give UVa a 4-0

The Cavaliers piled on five more runs in the third inning and batted around again to knock Norton from the game. Dan Grovatt (So., Tabernacle, N.J.) led off by drawing a walk and then scored when Proscia doubled to left-center. Reliever Matt Davenport had no more luck. After recording two outs, Davenport allowed three straight hits – an RBI single to Hunt, an RBI double to Parker and a two-run single to Gosselin.

UVa bumped its lead to 10-0 in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Parker, but the Tribe (3-2) answered with a run in the sixth on a run-scoring groundout by Tyler Stampone. UVa scored a run of its own in the sixth on a Proscia single to score Steven Kouril (Fr., Arlington, Va.).

Virginia is next in action at 4 p.m. Friday, playing host to Fordham. The two teams, along with Delaware, will play a three-team round robin this weekend. Fordham and Delaware will play at noon Friday. Saturday, UVa will play Delaware at noon and Fordham at 3 p.m. Sunday, Fordham and Delaware will meet at 11 a.m., with UVa taking on Delaware at 3 p.m.
