CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia baseball team racked up 20 hits in a 17-4 win over George Washington Wednesday afternoon at Davenport Field. Phil Gosselin (So., West Chester, Pa.), Dan Grovatt (So., Tabernacle, N.J.) and Jared King (Fr., Radford, Va.) each had three hits for Virginia.

Virginia used seven pitchers in the contest. Neal Davis (Jr., Baltimore, Md.) earned the win after starting and going two scoreless innings. He improved to 2-0 this season. Tom Gately (0-1) took the loss for GW after allowing five earned runs, six hits and four walks in three innings.

Gosselin also drove in four runs, while King scored three times and knocked in a pair. Steven Proscia (Fr., Suffern, N.Y.) hit a double and a triple and Franco Valdes (Jr., Miami, Fla.) and Corey Hunt (R-So., Charlottesville, Va.) each had a pair of hits. Eleven Cavaliers recorded at least one hit in the contest. UVa also stole five bases.

Virginia (9-0) struck for three runs in the second inning to start the scoring. Proscia led off with a triple and scored when Tyler Cannon (Jr., Pigeon Forge, Tenn.) hit a sacrifice fly. Valdes and King followed with back-to-back singles and after a walk to Jarrett Parker (So., Stafford, Va.), Gosselin singled to score two runs.

The Cavaliers added a pair of runs in the third inning on a double by Valdes to score Proscia and Cannon.

George Washington (2-6) got on the scoreboard with a run in the fourth inning when Tim Reeves singled to right to score Sean Rockey.

UVa tacked on a run in the fifth inning on a Proscia double and then posted two more in the sixth inning on a Danny Hultzen (Fr., Bethesda, Md.) groundout and a Grovatt single.

The Colonials scored a pair of runs in the seventh inning while taking advantage of some uncharacteristic wildness from UVa reliever Robert Morey (So., Virginia Beach, Va.). Morey loaded the bases on walks and then allowed a bloop RBI single to Chris Holland. Rockey then was hit by a pitch on the 11th pitch of his at bat to bring in the second run.

In the Cavaliers’ half of the seventh, UVa scored twice on Parker’s triple to deep center field, and Parker came all the way around when the center fielder twice dropped the ball when attempting to retrieve it.

Virginia finished its scoring onslaught by sending a dozen batters to the plate in a six-run eighth inning. King drove in two on a single and Gosselin plated a pair on a double. Will Campbell (Sr., Yorktown, Va.) had a double in the inning and later knocked in a run when he was hit by a pitch. The other UVa run scored on a wild pitch.

GW got its final run in the ninth inning on a groundout by Reeves.

The Cavaliers will make their first road trip of 2009 this weekend, visiting Wake Forest for a three-game series to open ACC play. The teams will play at 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday at Wake Forest Baseball Park.
