CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 14 Virginia baseball team scored in each of its final seven trips to the plate en route to an 11-3 win over Canisius Wednesday at Davenport Field. UVa ran its school-record winning streak to 17 games, the longest active streak in the country, as the Cavaliers remained the only undefeated team in Division I this year.
Dan Grovatt (So., Tabernacle, N.J.) went 3-for-4 to extend his hitting streak this season to 17 games. He also has a 19-game streak dating to last season. He scored a career-best four runs and stole two bases.
Danny Hultzen (Fr., Bethesda, Md.) added three hits and three RBI, while
Steven Proscia (Fr., Suffern, N.Y.) and
Corey Hunt (R-So., Charlottesville, Va.) each had a pair of hits.
David Coleman (So., Richmond, Va.) hit his first career home run and drove in two runs.
Perry Silverman led Canisius (6-9) with three hits and two RBI.
Virginia (17-0) got on the scoreboard with three runs in the second inning. Grovatt led off with a single, stole second and scored on a single by Proscia. Hultzen reached on a fielding error to move Proscia to second and both runners advanced on a sacrifice. Coleman followed with a grounder to third, which was booted and allowed a run to score. After another sacrifice moved the runners up, Hultzen came home on a Merritt balk.
Canisius answered with a run in the third inning. Silverman led off with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Branson Joseph. UVa responded with a run in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Hultzen to plate Grovatt, who had singled and stolen second.
The Golden Griffins posted two more runs in the fourth inning on a two-run single by Silverman.
The Cavaliers scored a run in the bottom of the fourth when Coleman hit his first career home run, a line drive which caromed off the facade of the bleachers in left field.
UVa added a trio of runs in the fifth inning. Grovatt singled with one out and scored an out later when Hultzen doubled off the wall in left field. After the Cavaliers loaded the bases, Hunt slapped a single to left field to score
John Hicks (Fr., Sandy Hook, Va.). Parker then walked to force in another run and give UVa an 8-3 lead.
The Cavaliers tacked on a run in the sixth inning. Proscia doubled with two out and scored when Hultzen ripped a single to right field. In the seventh, UVa added another run on a
Tyler Cannon (Jr., Pigeon Forge, Tenn.) single to score
John Barr (So., Ivyland, Pa.).
Virginia scored its final run in the eighth inning on a Hicks RBI single to score Grovatt.
The Cavaliers currently are playing the second game of their doubleheader, facing Wagner in the nightcap.
