CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Stony Brook jumped to a 5-0 lead in the first inning and never trailed in posting a 6-2 win over the No. 11 Virginia baseball team Wednesday night at Davenport Field. The loss was Virginia’s first in non-conference play this season (19-1).
Jeff Lorick (Jr., Duluth, Ga.) started for Virginia and suffered the loss, becoming the first UVa starting pitcher to take a loss this year. Lorick (2-1) failed to make it out of the first inning after giving up five earned runs, five hits and a walk in two-thirds of an inning.
The Virginia bullpen went 8.1 innings and allowed just an unearned run and three hits. The combination of
Shane Halley (Fr., Burke, Va.),
Neal Davis (Jr., Baltimore, Md.),
Justin Thompson (Fr., Danville, Va.),
Kevin Arico (So., Flemington, N.J.) and
Matt Packer (Jr., Germantown, Tenn.) did not walk a batter while striking out seven.
Stony Brook reliever Tyler Johnson (3-1) earned the win with one perfect inning. Seawolves starting pitcher Evan Stecko-Haley tossed four innings, allowing two earned runs, three hits and one walk while striking out three.
The SBU bullpen was impressive as well, combining to allow just three hits and two walks over the final five innings.
Danny Hultzen (Fr., Bethesda, Md.) had two of Virginia’s six hits – the Cavaliers’ second fewest this season.
Stony Brook (13-12) jumped on Lorick for five runs in the first inning, with all five coming after the first two batters were retired. After Nick Thode singled and Jeremy Nowak walked, Steve Mazzurco, Michael Tanney and Keith Fier hit consecutive RBI singles. Rob Dyer then hit a two-run double to left-center to spell the end of the night for Lorick.
Virginia (27-6) struck for two runs in the fourth inning. Hultzen tripled to center to lead off and after
Dan Grovatt (So., Tabernacle, N.J.) was hit by a pitch, Hultzen scored on a sacrifice fly by
Steven Proscia (Fr., Suffern, N.Y.). With two out,
Franco Valdes (Jr., Miami, Fla.) doubled to right-center to score Grovatt and cut the lead to 5-2.
Stony Brook responded with an unearned run in the top of the fifth. Chad Marshall bunted his way on to lead off, then moved to second on an error by
Jared King (Fr., Radford, Va.) on a dropped pickoff throw at first base. Thode then singled to right to score the run.
Virginia travels to No. 8 Georgia Tech for a three-game ACC series this weekend. Game one is at 7 p.m. Friday, with 6 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday contests set to follow.
