CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia women’s soccer team announced its 2008 schedule, which includes 11 home games at Klockner Stadium. This season, the Cavaliers play 12 of their 18 games against teams that participated in last season’s NCAA Tournament. Three of those opponents reached at least the quarterfinals, including reigning national runner-up Florida State.

“Our 2008 schedule will bring some outstanding teams to Klöckner Stadium, including NCAA tournament participants Loyola, William & Mary, Boston College, Duke, Wake Forest and North Carolina,” said head coach Steve Swanson. “We could not ask for a more challenging and exciting home slate for our team, but more importantly for our fans. Last year we broke the single game attendance record with 2,000 fans in a nationally televised 2-0 win over Virginia Tech. This game highlighted the unbelievable atmosphere that exists at Klöckner Stadium, from the local community to the students to the ever-popular Wahoolligans. We want to build on this momentum and feel the 2008 schedule will only help us make more history both on the field and in the seats.”

The regular season begins on Aug. 22 as the Cavaliers host Loyola in a rematch of a first round NCAA Tournament game last season. Also in the non-conference, the Cavaliers will host in-state rivals William & Mary, VCU, and Liberty, in addition to Dartmouth. Virginia will also travel south to play in the Georgia Nike Invitational to meet SEC powers Georgia and Auburn, both NCAA Tournament teams a year ago.

In ACC play, NCAA Tournament participants Boston College, North Carolina, Duke and Wake Forest, along with NC State will visit Charlottesville. The Cavaliers will visit Florida State, Miami, Clemson, Virginia Tech and Maryland.

In the preseason, the Cavaliers will play a pair of exhibition contests. Virginia will play NCAA semifinalist Notre Dame on August 16 in Traverse City, Mich., before returning home and hosting Georgetown at Klockner Stadium on August 18.

Last season, the Cavaliers had a 13-4-6 record and reached the round of 16 of the NCAA Tournament.
